X-Fi Titanium Out Of Sync

I've look on overclockers site at the asus cards, and none of then appear to have the square digital optical inputs??

that's because they have a dual purpose output that does coax and digital via an adaptor that comes with the card. you arent seeing no lag with the onboard DDLive output, you are seeing less lag with the x-fi's analogue output than the onboard's analogue output, chances are the onboards analogue is delayed to match its DDLive output. however the result is the same. dont expect a xonar to magically solve this problem - my d2 did the same thing.

and you still havent told us why you need both at the same time.

I dont get any lag at all when using onboard digital, just with the x-fi. Ive been testing it with the 'back' & 'forward' buttons on IE, they make a click sound dont they when you press them with the mouse, there is a definite lag when using the x-fi, but none that i can tell with my ears when using onboard digital. Im guess as the onboard sound is decoding, where the x-fi is encoding.....must take more processing thus causing the audio lag??

I dont need both at the same time, i just want both connected up, as i dont always want to have to turn the amp on for the PC to get sound, in which case i can just use the dellsoundbar for my sound.

What I do not understand, why not let the receiver apply Pro Logic to the 2 channel sound converting it to 5.1. Now the bit rate is changed to 48khz, it can now do this. Before the incorrect bit rate meant the receiver can only put the sound out in stereo as it came in.

The lag is only an issue if the X-Fi has to encode to 5.1 before it sends the audio out to the receiver. I do not see the need to use the encoding pack, unless of course one wants to convert to 5.1 prior to the audio being sent to the receiver. If this is the case, then the Xonar DX which has DD Live will be the same as the X-Fi and produce lag.

The lag is only solved if no encoding is done at all within the PC. So the card, whichever it may be, sends out stereo via digital and the receiver then applies up mixing to convert to 5.1.

well switch one off when you arent using it then?
True, but one cannot always have the cake and eat it too. :)

using the sony's 6 channel analogue input he can ;)

I could do this, but this wouldnt give as good effect, as using true DD though would it? What i have noticed, on my amp i have a blue light which is labeled 'Multi channel decoding', now when im using the x-fi DD Live, or the DD on the onboard sound, this lights up, but if i am using just 2 channel, this doesnt light up, so i dont think my amp is decoding the 2 channel correctly??

2 channel isnt multi channel, its stereo. Multi channel in this case is taken as meaning more than two channels. if you arent sending multi channel to the amp then the amp has nothing to decode.

yep. your x-fi has a 5.1 analogue output and your amp has a 5.1 analogue input. its either that or use your onboards DDLive output., its up to you.

Here is a thought. If the mobo has DDL, and encodes real time DD to 5.1 to pass out to the receiver, there is no lag when comparing digital to analogue. As James said, the mobo must be delaying the analogue to match the digital. Why the hell does the Creative card not do this? Because it's an add on? Why the hell can't Creative sort that out with an update, unless they can, and are too lazy.

I didn't know until I read up on DD Home Theatre that it encompassed DDL, I thought it was just DD and therefore only decoding.

Just a bit of an update, after researching a HTPC/media centre build im looking at, i have found out that HDMI output GFX cards also do 5.1 DD over the HDMI port, if i go doen this route i wont get audio sync issues will i? Then i can flog off my X-Fi card and old 265 GTX. But what is the quality of sound like over a GFX card, am i right in thinking the same as mobo onboard?
