Just read the spec at creative website:
http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=208&product=14066&nav=1

Says that the digital i/o is needed but is that only for optical input or is for output as well.

Also when you say that it only sends digital out in 2 channel stereo. Is there no way to get 5.1 digital out from an x-fi or are the digital outputs on the front panel on the platinum model upwards 5.1?

Only way you're getting 5.1 over a digital connection from the X-Fi is from a DVD.

What about when playing divx/xvid's with AC3 (or any other type of multichannel audio format) 6ch, with ffdshow set to output the sound through spdif?

Well, I should have said "only with a pre-encoded source which can be passed over S/PDIF to a compatible decoder", but typing DVD was easier :p

I'm getting so many issues with my X-Plosion in games, it's not fair :( I really thought it could replace Soundstorm, which worked, but no.

When I play MTA:San Andreas with the X-Plosion, my system BSOD's as soon as the game loads and background noise is played. The BSOD references cmuda3.sys, the driver for the X-Plosion. Turning off ALL hardware acceleration in the advanced sound control panel settings fixes this issue, but the game sounds naff then.

So, I think I am gonna get an X-Fi and the above mentioned digital IO thingy, and use the digital for everything, which means just PCM stereo for games for the timebeing, but at least I'll be able to play without crashing. As I don't have a spare set of analogs on my AMP, I am stuck with stereo analog until I either get a pc speaker set, or a new amp, whichever funds allow :)

Sorted now

I was trying to use optical as I only had 3.5mm optical lead and thought that was the only 3.5mm digital connection possible

It uses coaxial (using 3 adapters to get from 3.5mm to phono :o )

Its outputs 2ch pcm @ 48/96khz and ac3/dts from dvd which sounds cleaner with no hum which I can faintly hear on the analogue connection

Using the analogue outputs I couldnt get the center channel in movies to work which suggests a bug in the creative dolby decoder

Using the creative control panel the center channel would talk which shows it was working fine but in movies the center channel wasnt being broadcast meaning no dialogue was being heard in dts or ac3 audio

The other channels worked fine which sounded mad in many movies I tried

Bizzarely the only time the center could ever be heard on movies was when i selected external bitstream on the dts panel

I tested this using nvidia's + ffdshow audio filters

Not yet tested my headphones via amp over a digital connection but they sounded good via analogue :)

its a bit **** poor of creative tbh. can buy a motherboard with both optical and co-ax digital outputs. but 75 quids worth of creative sound card doesnt
