Any X Men comic collectors in here? I really want to start collecting them, but find the range of crossovers and timelines so confusing. Can someone lay it out for me, or point me to somewhere that does a good job of listing the issues and titles that are parts of each storyline?

Is it best to get the TPBs and then work on individual comics?

I have started getting Uncanny and Astonishing monthly, so at least am making some headway into the current storylines :)

Cheers

Forget X-Men, although they are the back bone of Marvel I find the stories to be pretty dull and the style of artwork is pretty basic

For me it is:
Anything with Galactus in it
Nova
Guardians of the galaxy
Deadpool
Hulk stuff has been real good lately including: Skarr

Good Series to read:
Annihilation
Annihilation: Conquest
Secret Invasion was okay and lead to some good cross overs
Dark Reign

You're really gonna struggle trying to read the entire xmen related comic series in any kind of chronological order. Firstly its been going for a really long time and secondly its really convoluted, especially since the 1990's. Characters have travelled forward and back in time, there are multiple earths. Very hard to digest in one lump.

If you really want to get into it, read only the early parts of some major character bio's. Then go for the really big sagas (Pheonix, Age of Apocalypse, Strife, Onslaught, House of M etc.)

As mentioned above it can be dull with basic art, but that is dependent on artist and writer. I tend to read xmen as a form of nostalgia. There are better comic titles out there.

My knowledge of current titles is a little limited, given thet I like the idea of X Men (Mutants, superpowers, some dark storylines) what else might be good for me to take a look at? I am considering Witchblade at the moment, and am slowly putting together a full run of Spawn, but would consider anythign really :) Ideally I dont want to start something that's on #546 or something though :)

Hulk is a good way to go especially with the recent-ish intro of the "Red" Hulk. World War Hulk is possibly one of the best Hulk sagas I have read so far.

Might also want to look into Deepak Chopras - "Devi"

You might also want to get into "Heroes". Graphic novels for the show are available online and they link in with the episodes too :)

To the OP, it depends on how far back you are willing to go. You can head right to the 80s if you like or just stick to the canon as of the early 2000s.

I would recommend the following X-books:

1. Phoenix/Dark Phoenix Saga
2. Age of Apocalypse (warning: this is one of the alternate reality ones)
3. Onslaught Saga
4. E is for Extinction
5. House of M (which is a bit overrated IMO)
6. Manifest Destiny
7. Messiah Complex

However, personally I would highly recommend some of the most recent work on the book:

1. Grant Morrisson's tenure (not all of it mind, but definitely the kick-off point which was called "E is for Extinction", "Imperial" and "Here Comes Tomorrow") which lasted from issues #114 to #156 or so when they renamed the book 'New X-Men'.
2. All of Joss Whedon's work on Astonishing X-Men, which was another core book that was launched a few years back - superb stuff.

If you are really into this, I would recommend the key storylines already mentioned, as well as the new ones I listed. Do your research though! And start small!

Thanks Random Guy, that's alll really helpful :)

I have been thinking of starting to get Astonishing added to my monthly reservation at the comic shop, will do that and have a look at the earlier ones.

I can remember reading the Phoenix saga in the late 80's at a friend's house and being completely engrossed - at about the same time I was introduced to Filk music, and one of the best songs of the time was 'Child of Darkness, Child of Light' (iirc) about the Phoenix, very moving.

I guess even thinking about trying to get all of it at this stage is ridiculous unless you have several thousand quid to throw at it (which I dont!), so picking out the storylines that most appeal is the way to go.

No problem Phoen1x :)

Grab the Astonishing Trades and Maybe the first Grant Morisson one if you can/want.

Ebay is your friend though! Some of my mates have reported getting excellent deals on comics there!

Oh you poor thing.
Heh - horses for courses :) I tend to like anything with a mythological/religious/legendary background, and Spawn ticks all those boxes, with an anti-hero, excuses for settings in the whole of earth's history, and twists all over the place. I also love the bold colourful artwork, really leaps off the page - the most recent ones much less so, but the style fits the current storyline.

Yeah I have been looking, you really need to nose around though, as there are huge variations in price. For example, I saw Spawn #1 for £36.50 (NM condition), and I have just bought exactly the same comic in the same condition for £8.00.

Will have a mooch at lunchtime and see what the Astonishing TPBs are going for :)

Edit: Just found the first 3 Astonishing TPBs for a fiver each plus postage, seems a good deal :)

Sorry to hijack the thread, but seeing as there are some comic book fans in here and im still in Korea. Has Grant Morrisson's current version of the authority continued? When i was still in England he was apparently quite ill and I was picking up issues once every 6 months!

You would love Captain Britain, Doctor Strange and possibly Hercules then!
