X1800 XT is faster in 90% of games and is looking to be a more reliable safer option so go for that.

Shouldnt be much in it? Maybe if its an overclocked 7900GS vs a stock X1800XT maybe but X1800XT will win nearly all tests.

Maybe not much in it 7900GT vs X1800XT but wouldnt have thought a stock 7900GS vs stock X1800XT.

Again it comes down to the games you going to play. Cant see more than 10-15% speed difference overall though. Theres barely 5% between the gs and the gt from the reviews ive read.

it doesnt... there are very few openGL games out there and openGL based games are where Nvidia always has the lead due to ATi`s sucky driver implementation when it comes to openGL, i.e. quake, Doom3, riddick, F.E.A.R. and thats about it, every other game on the market the X1800XT mops the floor with the GS.
