hi all need some advice :)

would a

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

be a good upgrade on my x1800xt ? fed up with the sound of the fan on it! and i like new hardware :)

much of a boost or do i need the higher end cards? for my rez?

Oh i game in 1680x1050 with an opty @2.7ghz 2gb ram.
 
Though it would be a major upgrade but i suggest that you wait for the new AtiR600 cards to arrive. The competition will drive the prices down and you would have more to choose from.

P.S The Atir600 are believed to be much better than nvidia's G80s.

Are you getting unplayable framerates? If not don't bother.
 
Will be a cracking upgrade as the GTS is faster than the x1950 XTX's, im going from an x1800 XT 512mb to a 320mb GTS myself, and i only game at 1280x1024, but it will handle your res fine as well. :)
 
I agree with squiffy, don't bother for now unless you're unhappy with the performance you're getting.

If you do really want to upgrade, wait and see what the GTS 320MB is like for £199. Alternatively R600/R610/R630 and the 8600GT/Ultra are coming out, and might be fantastic bargains.

Just change the HSF fan. Zalman VF900 much quieter than stock, even with the Zalman at full pelt.

Mate's got a X1800XT and I have a X1900XT, fitted VF900 after a month or so.
 
Aye, I had a VF900 on my X1800XT and X1900XT, very quiet and very efficient.

Arctic Accelero X2 is also a great, cheaper option.

You get some with it, but TBH I ran my X1900XT without them as I'd previously used them on my X1800XT and they wouldn't stick anymore. No worries.
 
Yes it is. And no you don't.
Although the new Thermalright cooler is a much better cooler, as you can add a 12cm if you wish.

If you're happy with the performance don't upgrade as it's just a waste of money.
 
ok think u have sold that too me not really wanting to UPgrade just yet!, I will use as5 but what about sticking ram sinks they supply the glue or do i use as5+glue?

The ramsinks Zalman provide have an adhesive layer that is pretty damn hard to get off once it's going. :)
 
Im still happy with the performance of my x1800 tbh, still cuts through everything great at 1280x1024, i just feel like a change seen as ive had it since they came out in Nov 05, and these next gen GTS's only being £199 are an absolute bargain. :D
 
thats what i thought but hey, if can quieten this sucker down I will put up with it until end of year when I may actually need a DX10 card and the gts will be nearer £100 by then I bet !
 
I'd say wait for the new ATI cards as well, aren't they supposed to come out in march?
I'm planning to upgrade from a 1950pro, original plan was to get a 1950XTX but since it's only one more month, I guess i'll live.
I seriously hope the end result wont be a huge card like the 8800GTX, have no idea if my V1000 could fit it :p
 
ok i ordered the Zalman VF900 I am intrested in knowing if with this fitted on my x1800xt I can then fit a Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge Cooler to my A8N-E
