X1800XT vs GTX8800 (but with AMD socket 939 3700 CPU)

Weird really, because some GPU's cope better at these higher res rendering more than at lower res with some CPU limitation.

Probably high res optimizations the companies put in, IE reducing IQ.

Because I can't really think of a way a graphics card can push more FPS with more pixels to push.

:)

Yeah I use the Oblivion.exe process ... it works fine for Oblivion and Bioshock and wont work with R6 Vegas / Moh Airbourne or Coj

I was aware with ATi you had to do the Oblivion.exe hack since AA did not apply, at least with the 2900's it was the case.

I thought the newer drivers have taken away the need to hack the exe? You'll just have to set AA in CCC or ATT and voile.

My 1800XT 256Mb can just about handle some of the new games with high details 1280*1024 at playable frame rate. Although an upgrade is ideal.

C2D is dirt cheap now so no reason not to upgrade it if you're on single core skt939 A64's:

E2140 + 965P-DS3P (there's one in clearance for £41!) + Geil PC6400 2Gb and you have your very own C2D rig for <£150.

your 3700 will be fine, to see if a new gfx card will make a difference for you, try playing the games that run slow for you at a rez of 640x480. if the framerate increases then you know your gfx card limited, and a gtx would mean that you can run at the higher rez with more AA slapped on and still end up with the framerate your current card gets at 640x480. if the framerate of your game does not increase when you have dropped the rez down to 640x480, then you need more cpu power.

only game that will really slap your cpu silly is supreme commander.

Would slapping a new GTX8800 in my old(ish) rig be a good idea or do I need to fork out a gazillion squid for a core 2 duo + board + ram etc. to get all the benefit of a 'top-of-the-range' card?

I want better/smoother graphics in games and use a 22" monitor native res. of 1650 x 1050 with my single core 3700 CPU running at 2.4

Any comments welcome;)
Considering you could probably buy a competent C2D setup for the same money as you would be spending on a new 8800GTX I'm not entirely sure where you've got "gadzillion squid" from...

3700+ will probs be a tad lower then the 3800+, or may be about same, :- http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_8800_gtx_gts_amd_cpu_scaling/ if it is a tad lower, be only by about 1-2fps.

Nice find, shame there are no C2D results.

I'd say the 3700 should be a little above the 3800 as the 3700 although single core clocks faster.

I've just bought a 2900Pro to replace my 7900GT SLI in my C2D system. Today I've been setting up the SLI in an older AMD system.

Just having a bit of a play on BIOShock and at the same settings and 1280 resolution there is barely any difference in FPS from my E4300 @ 3.3Ghz to a single core venice @ 2.5Ghz with the SLI. Obviously the 2900 is a fair bit quicker.

To only issue I had was originally I only had 1GB ram in it. Game would stutter and stall in places while swapping to disk. Anyhow added another 1GB and it plays perfectly.

I've just droped my old IHS-less opty 165 in there and am running a quick Orthos session then I'll have a run round and see in adding another core makes any difference.

Personally I'd look at getting a better card, Not sure I'd stretch to a GTX but a 8800GTS or 2900Pro and give it a whirl. If you're not happy with the results then you can uprade the rest of the systems. If you are, then by all means turn up the details and enjoy it a while longer

3800 x2 is proper cheapo, and they clock fairly well, even if you clock it to 2.5ghz which is easy enough you will get good benefit in games that use multicore processing.
id like core2duo too but im gonna wait to see if amd have anything good comming out. my next upgrade will be quad core and nothing less. although 8core is extremley tempting if it comes out cheap enough.

also if your not afraid of overclocking you can still get s939 opteron dual cores which offer a simple yet effective upgrade solution.

I notice in most games the 8800 GTX gave double the performance of the x1950xtx even with a 3800+ x2

Yes you need fx-62 (or an intel chip which is even faster) to really get the most out of the 8800 GTX but since you can get 3800+ x2 and 4200+ x2 which will overclock to fx-62 speed, this will give you some indication of what to expect if you did a cheapo cpu upgrade and a GTX.

I noticed a huge boost with my dual core but mainly in windows running smoother, faster boot ups. The biggest boost came from my graphics card upgrade.

gtx 8800 gtx with athlon 64

done the same upgrade,
opteron @ 2.4 7800 gt 3d mark 06 3600
opteron @ 2.4 8800 gtx 6800
x3 4400 @2.4 8800 gtx 9800
not tried oc yet.

plays everything well at 1600x 1050
