This is my system at the moment:

AMD X2 4800+
Asus A8N-Deluxe SLI
1 GB Crucial Ballistix
Raptors x2 RAID 0
Gecube X1800XT
Dell 2005FPW (20")

As I have an SLI motherboard is there something I could upgrade to ~£350 either dual GPUs or a single ATI/Nvidia for improved performance in the following games I play...

1. GTR
2. MS Flight Sim 2004 --> Flight Sim X (I know its DX10)
3. Rfactor
4. COD2

Anything worth upgrading to?

Thanks

Flight Sim X is also DX9 :)

Is the X1800XT struggling with those games?
i wouldnt of thaught its worth upgrading yet

Things like GTR & MS FS 2004 @ 1680x1050x32 with everything maxxed out does struggle.

I wouldn't upgrade either. You could upgrade to Crossfire motherboard if you want to stick with ATI. But that means £70-£110 for the mobo, and another hundred and something odd quid for X1800XT mastercard

Id get an x1900 XT for that res, can't go Crossfire with the x1800 as theres no Crossfire masters around now as the x1800's were stopped in January. :)

Well for £350, you could get SLI 7900GS, but at thta res id prob go for a 512Mb card, so thats either a X1900XT/X, a 7900GTX/GTO or a 512Mb 7950GT.

In benchies the 7900GS SLI setup would be quicker, but in games id be swaying towards an X1900XT or 7900GTO and another gig of RAM :)

Surprised nobody has said 7950GX2, in fact I'm more surprised I'm saying it myself.

You can have a Leadtek one for £340 inc. VAT at the moment.

You know i totally forgot about the GX2 :p

Thanks for the reply guys....seems interesting.

Looking at benchies at Anandtech, seems the 7950GX2 is the one to get for higher fps with high AA. The next question is, will my Tagan 480 be able to handle it?

Yeah but the x1900 XT is only about £230, and it handles that res easily, no point spending over £100+ more.

Good point..the less spent here means more spent on car audio!

When are the next gen of cards coming btw?

True, but considering he's going from an X1800XT I didn't know what to think. I mean I saw a massive performance increase going from an X1800XT to an X1900XT, but everyone puts that down to me going Core 2 Duo at the same time (and I am finding myself in agreement with that statement.)

I have no idea how big the jump would really have been had I kept my old hardware, and benchmarks seem to say "not a lot really" but I suppose benchmarks be damned sometimes when you actually get it in your system as you often end up surprised (maybe this is what happened to me, actually. lol.)

The jump from X1800XT to X1900XT isn't much - I think its about 10fps which isn't really worth it.

If you look at the benchmarks its a great deal more than 10fps in most games that are gpu limited.

Right so the general consensus seems to be upgrade to an X1900XT OC to XTX speeds and my comp should be able to handle most of what I play maxxed out.

Well there is only one way to find out.. :D

That's what I did and I'm impressed. ;)

Cool, I am looking at the HIS X1900XT AVIVO - seems a good price...£230 inc, probably not worth spending the extra £30 for the crossfire edition?
