As title guys, I've got an ati radeon x1900 running in my rig at the minute. Yet I've noticed it's no longer sold, only an x1950. I was looking to boost my graphics power (and perhaps run my second monitor) by running two cards, but I no longer think this is possible.

Could I perhaps flash the x1900 with an x1950 bios and then buy an x1950 card?

Spec Below:

AMD X2 4800
Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe
2gb G.Skill pc3700
ATI Radeon x1900

So what are my options?

Cheers,
Ant

No need to flash your x1900 as they work fine with the x1950's in Crossfire. :)

Doesn't need a master, Crossfire was added into the drivers a while ago now, just won't be as fast as the master card way, as it will be software crossfire he's running if he doesn't have a master.

Not worth the effort for software crossfire.

get a HD 3870.

you can get a second hand x1900xt from members market for £55ish

price of 3870 is £160ish

if you have the money go for the 3870, if you dont get another x1900xt, but 3870 is the best option it will use about 1/4 of the electricity as 2 x1900xt's, and let you use 2 monitors as well, the choice is yours

as for software crossfire being pointless they are wrong, as long as you have a decent processor, you arent likely to see any performance hit, if you do have a slow processor then the hit on performance will be 5-15% hardly major

Thanks for the swift and insightful replies guys. It seems then that I should spend the extra cash and get an HD3870.

What are your views on the current system spec, if I team this with the new gfx card will I be able to run most modern games very well? (Thinking more of the recent, rescource hungry ones like crysis)

nothing will run crysis well, not for another 2 years anyway

I got a boost from going from a 2.5ghz X2 to a 2.4Ghz Conroe with a X1900XTX at 1600x1200.

So up to you really. I would upgrade it all personally. What res u game at?

whatever you do dont upgrade now, the new intel processors are gonna be here within a month or two and they are even faster, less heat, more overclockable, etc, etc. they are also faster clock for clock against the conroes so very efficient, they also use less electricity, upgrade your card, and start saving for a new system, you dont wanna cheap out when it comes to a full upgrade, although to be honest, your current cpu is about the same as a 2.2ghz core 2 duo, which is still fast in my books, so maybe even upgrade it all in 6 months?

I'm running a single X1900XT at the moment. I get a score in 3D mark of 5009 with a stock e2140. How much of a peformance increase would another X1900XT give me? Roughly anyway :) Or would it be better to just get like a single 3850?

Thanks, Borgia :)

Sound, sound advice. Much appreciated cheers

I'm more than willing to be patient. I'm in no rush. I just like sparkly new things :)

Think I shall see what the next few months have to offer.

Thanks guys,

Oh it will, as long as you have very deep pockets.

I have a friend with a PC that cost about 4 grand - it runs Crysis superbly. - Unlike mine! :( :p

As great as it looks, I Can't help thinking it does not look worth the near £1k cost of the Graphics cards alone !!!!
