X1900 Fan Noise. Is it Loud ?

D.P. said:
I've not seen a single review that said it was quite, only reviews that proclaimed how loud it is.

The X1800 and X1900 are not as quiet as the 7800 GTX 256 or 512. Period.

Noise levels are subjective and depends on a persons particular frequency response. Maybe the X1800 and X1900 run with a higher frequency which is beyond some peoples peak hearing threshold so to you it seems quiter as you are not as sensitive at those frequnecies. To those that are sensitive will find the higher pitch even more irritating than a lower pitched sound even if it was just as loud relatively.

And sound from 2 crossfire'd cards wont necessarily be any louder than a single card, its certainly not a linear relationship in any case.

And I thought we were done arguing :p

There are many people on these forums which has said themselves theses cards are quiet. I prefer real world opionions to be honest.

Its VERY refreshing to see you have nothing to criticize about the X1900 other than its apparent dustbuster loudness!!

By the way, D.P., have you ever heard a X1800 or X1900? If not, how on earth can people trust what you say? Sure we can all read reviews, but as many are aware, these reviews vary so much in performance, noise, heat, power etc that its hard to reach a conclusion.

The 512MB GTX may very well be quieter, I have not heard it in real life so will not offer any insight into this (unlike you, may I add).

Oh they will, what might not change radically is the percieved noise.

its two equal sound souces added will give a 3db increase in the sound level that is hardly noticable you need a 10db increase to notice the increase

please ingnore me i am deaf ;)

With all due resepct I'm not sure your confrontational attitude is helping anyone. Please keep the thread on topic and if you could avoid any personal digs with anyone I would appreciate it:)

Noise...gah! I'm still trying to get the fan speed control to work on my 7800GT. I want to stick in a different PC to find if it's a bizarre compatibility issue with my motherboard (yes, I am scraping the barrel of possible reasons now), but everyone I know has either a laptop, an older PC with AGP or (shock, horror!) they don't have a PC at all.

Of course, I could mod the card (new cooler, connect the stock cooler's fan to a fan ontroller, whack an 80mm fan on the stock heatsink and disconnect the stock fan...), but I'm actually intending to keep the guarantee on this card. I'm getting less adventurous in my middle age :)

70dB is about as loud as a standard domestic vacuum cleaner...if the X1900 series really was that loud, ATi would be ruining their reputation by selling them.

In 3DMark05 the AMD Athlon FX-57, 2 GB, DVD-rom, NFORCE4 based test platform shows a maximum peak use of 290 Watts for the Radeon X1900 XTX. And that's a lot. Let's have a look at my findings:

Graphics card 100% load and System Idle

X1300 XT 193 133
X1600 XT 211 140
X1800 XL 229 155
X1800 XT 273 160
X1900 XTX 290 165

* Results in Watt

They also stated

"We measure roughly 50 dBa which is to be considered a quiet to moderate noise level coming from the PC yet also a norm as most of our tests end up at this sound level. Again, this is a very subjective test and that dBa level includes all noise in the environment."

Well as I have said, I guess you trust reviews better than people with the cards sitting in their PC's. That reviewer does not stipulate how many fans he has in his PC does he, for all you know he could have delta fans in there.

I built my new system last night with a X1900XT-X in it and I can tell you now, it is not loud, apart from boot up that is ;)

I have the x1800XT and OMG I thought **** she's gonna blow!! when I first booted it hehe.

Never heard a fan as loud as this one in 3D mode or at boot, I've had many ATI cards, and some with Arctic Coolers and I was a bot shocked at the noise. Thankfully it's only in 3D mode, so when I'm playing Day of Defeat or BF2 or COD2 I can't hear it over the speakers, but playing Eve online with the sound disabled I can hear it.

Thankfully at night the noise is a nice low frequency rumble which soothes me :)

Bah, you people moaning about fan noise. Get a waterblock on it and be done with it. :D

On a related note, I popped around to a friend's house last night so he could gloat over his shiney, new X1900XT-X. When he turned his PC on it reminded me of the opening credits from Top Gun on the aircraft carrier. No really, it did.

Once into windows, it wasn't noticeable though. When playing games, you could hear it if you had no other noise going on in the room. Once you turned the speakers up, or if you had some music or TV in the background, you would be very hard pushed to notice it.
