X1900 Master Card & CrossFire Questions

Hi All,

Atm I'm on AGP and I'm considering upgrading my rig. One of the things I'm after is dual DVI to drive 2 tft's.

I'm torn between 2 ways to do my upgrade.

1 - Get a X1900XTX and stick it in (wasteful but good stable mobos) Asus A8N-SLI motherboard (fanless one).

2 - Get a X1900XT (or XTX) and stick it in Asus A8R-MVP and then perhaps in the future get a master card. I'm not 100% convinced over this CF motherboard (read some issues on other hardware boards).

3 - As 2 but get a master card 1st. Question is does the master card have dual DVI or is it single and the master adaptor only?

Any peeps running either full CF setups - if so what if any problems are you having?

Cheers

If you want to go Crossfire, then the Asus is a stonking board, its the best performer by far, the Neo2 Crossfire one is also good, as is the Abit as they all have the ULI Southbridge, you could wait until March, as thats when the new boards with the RD580 chipset is out, and they are much faster than the RD480 thats out now.

The Crossfire master card will only have one DVI, as the other port is for the Crossfire cable, Vogons running 2x x1800's in Crossfire on the Asus board, he's got a thread about it here , the Asus seems to be fine for him. :)

EDIT: Just read the spec of the Crossfire mastercard, it says it is Dual DVI, but not to sure as judging by the pic its a different connector.

Hi there

Are you interested in the idea of adding another card at a later date for SLi or Crossfire?

If so forget about the 7800 GTX 512MB as come March there will be none about......

If you want Crossfire then start by buying a master card now, the ATI branded one as its compatible with all X1900 XT and XT-X cards....
Though when you come to purchase a second X1900 XT slave card you also need to make sure you have a Crossfire motherboard, best solutions at the moment are the Asus A8R-MVP and MSI RD480 Neo or get one of the RD580 based boards in March.

The X1900 is the better buy for many reasons:-
1. Its cheaper
2. Crossfire is more future proof as X1900's have a longer lifespan than current 7800 cards.
3. X1900 is more future proof with its 48 pixel shaders.
4. X1900 is faster in nearly all current games out over 7800 GTX 512mb
5. X1900 will get faster and faster as new driver releases come out.
6. X1800/X1900's have superior in-game image quality over 7800's and once again their 2D quality is sharper.
7. AVIVO is superior to any other VIVO solution on other cards.

If I were you buy yourself an ATI Master X1900 card now if you want to Crossfire in the next month or so, but if Crossfire does not bother you then go for any of the X1900 cards on offer as they are all built by ATI so identical. :)

Hi m8

X1900 Crossfire card is Dual DVI!! :)

Hi Gibbo,

Thanks for the reply - The confusion comes from the piccy's of the Master Cards as it has the funny connector. If you have a single master card (to begin with) and want to use dual DVI monitors is one connected to the DVI connector and the other to a lead hanging off the CF connector?

Sorry for foolish questions :)

Cheers
