I have just built a new system and it works fine except for occasionaly the screen goes all funny, showing just one colour e.g pink or white. It is completely random when and which colour comes up.

Every now and then the screen will go to a random solid color or a solid color with black or gray vertical lines. This even happens with low graphics processing, usually idle. I have tried connecting a different monitor but the problem is still their.
So i thought maybe my psu is underpowered, but i couldn't find any definate requirements

i reckon its either deffective or my psu isnt up to scratch

Sounds like your psu, think a few people have reported problems with that psu, a search of the forums and google might be able to confirm this.

U could monitor and log youre sytem info & power with something like everest ultimate edition, recreate the problem and check the logs

Jammy,

I wouldn't like to point the finger at the PSU, I have two X1900GT's hanging off my 580wt Hiper PSU, but then, I don't have the Type-R version.

I have seen the odd problem with the Type-R versions. As suggested, try to get some logging going or some way of monitoring your voltages. Then see if you get any lags when the X1900 borks.

The other possibility, is dodgy connection between the video card and motherboard, or the PCI-Ex 6 pin connector. Does your PSU have a spare connector ? If so, try that.

ive currently got my mates 7800gt running fine on the motherboard, ill try and monitor the voltages, but as i said this problem occurs randomly and reuires a reboot to rectify, therefore not sure if enough time is avaliable to get the program up, i'll give it a go though

I would be looking towards the psu as well, lots of reported problems with the hipers :(
As stated in the above post the XTs draws a lot more power than a 7800GT

Had to get rid of mine 580w Type-R after around 8 months of use due to the rails dropping very low, caused me no end of problems

You can test it with a multimeter to see though ;)
