Brought the above mentioned card to put in a new rigg for a mate and it keeps locking up in games. phoned up ocuk and i was asked me what psu i was using. When a informed them it was a hyper type R 580, i was told it only had a 20amp 12v rail, which is insufficient to run a x1900xt. Is this true? I have also tried the card with ny enemax liberty 500, which has a 22amp 12v rail and it made no difference.

yea i forgot to mention that, the hiper 580 is x1900 crossfire certified so it should handle 2 x1900 cards. so don;t worry about running 1 card from it.

Sorry mate but the guy you talked to has absolutely no idea what he's talking about, I hope it wasn't Andy (the non-Gibson tech one) as he's a top bloke from the conversations I've had to have with him on the phone in the past.

As said above that PSU is officially rated by ATI for Crossfire, never mind running a single card.

After reading up on the 580 Hyper type-R the PSU supplies dual 26.3A +12V rails which should be more than enough to run your rig. I also get the odd lock up in games using a x1900xt even after changing my PSU from a Akasa 460W to the one in my sig which is also on ATI's x1900 crossfire certified list. I doubt its PSU related in my case since I've tryed 2 and the OCZ's rails are solid (unlike the Akasa's). I'm debating whether to RMA the card but will do a little more testing first.

Although there seems to be a few users happily running 580 type r's and x1900 combo's on here Tomshardware doesn't seem too fond of the PSU, they say it doesn't comply within its advertised specification? Check out their PSU stress test round up here. Personally I doubt its your PSU but maybe (like I *think* I have) you've been unlucky enough to be sent a flakey card ?
