x1900xt = nightmare?

Hi,

OK, i bought a x1900xt 512mb. I am using the standard air cooling which was supplied with the graphics card.

It overheats far too easily because the fan is running @ like 20%, so i downloaded ati tool; i was able to put the fan on 100%. However when playing ingame or running 3dmark05 the monitor would randomly switch off about 1 and a half minutes in. Then the computer would restart.

When it restarts i can see a red LED come on in the bottom left of my motherboard.

My motherboard is the Lanparty UT nf4 ULTRA-D.

Does anyone know if there is anything i can do? Something i havent turned on? Something i may have done wrong?

Thanks,
Daniel

My cpu is an opteron 148 2.2ghz.
2 x SATA HDD - 1 is a raptor 74gb 16mb cache 10k rpm. the other is a 300gb hdd.

My PSU is 480W XClio-SCF aPFC. Cost me around 50quid.

Any ideas now?

Thanks a lot for your help.

What drivers are you using? I tried the 6.4s and the 6.5s and they both caused my monitor to turn off when watching films or DVDs. Might be worth trying to borrow a decent PSU off of someone as well and see if the problem still occurs.

I dont really know anyone that would have a PSU higher than that.

It says to run an x1900xt you should have 400 + watt, so in a ideal world, it should work without any issues.

Did yours stop restarting when you upgraded the psu?

What case do you have, I have basically the same as you

Abit crossfire mobo
Opty 170
1900 XT
2Gb Ram
1*36GB Raptor
1* 250Gb maxtor 16mb drive
Tagan 480W

No overheating problems at all

Are you sure its your graphics card thats causing yoru problems? Whats event Viewer saying?

I have a thermaltake case with around 6 fans blowing in and out.

My chipset is idle at 45 degrees ... is that right?

Could it be that which is causing the problem?

My gfx card doesnt go above 75 degrees when ingame for the 1 minute that i am ingame. And then the computer just restarts :\

FrankJH:

My Specs:

2.2 148 opteron
2GB Gskill Ram
1 x Raptor 16mb cache
1 x Maxtor sata
Gigabyte x1900xt 512mb
Thermaltake case with around 6 fans correctly circulating.
480w XCLIO Meridian PSU
DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D

We have very similar specs. What chipset drivers are you using? The ones supplied with the board? New ones from the website?

What drivers are you using for the GFX card?

Cheers

My x1900xt turned the pc off a few times in the hot weather with the stock cooler upto 50%(just too damned noisy otherwise), so in the end got the artic cooler x2 vga cooler made a huge difference to my temps and got rid of the turning off.

Can't say thats the same problem you have to what i had, psu i am using a 550w antec true power 2.0

Loud isnt the word tbh. It can be heard next door.

The fact is, why is hardware so unreliable these days. Perhaps its just me but ... the nf3 dfi ultra-d was a bugger, dodgy bios chip, 2 chipset fans not working. Bought the connect3d x1900xt from OCUK that was faulty. Bought a gigabyte x1900xt 512mb nd now this doesnt seem to be working.

All i want is for the pc to work :P

20% is not enough for 3D operation, at that my 2D speeds get to 80C.

@ 60% I keep stock clocks at under 65C.

Set varible fan speeds, 80C = 100%, 70C = 80% 65C = 70% etc...

Does this have to be done with ATI tool?

Yes and no.

Its in the same control panel as where you set 20% in ATi Tool.

And using Omega drivers - ATi Tray tools has X1900 fan options, but you can't clock.

Also, setting 20% fan speed and not disabling the ATi services mean they conflict = crash.

So unless you fully use ATi Tool and disable ATi services = can't use ATi Tool.

CR.

Thanks a lot.

Ive re-installed windows, used the chipset drivers from the motherboard CD, using the omega 6.3 drivers. Quake4 is working no problem.

trying CS:S now. If it works then ill install my sound card and do everything bit by bit.

Worrying thing is that when im running 3dmark05 it just gets an error half way through. :\

I'd look at the fan settings first,

I have my 1900's in Crossfire, i too have had problems with crashes when the cards overheat, this only happens in my system when I use CCC to set the clocks for the mastercard to max.

I discovered that if I use ATI tool to override the fan settings I have no carshes whatsoever.

I double click the ATItool icon and select no when the program asks me if I wish to shutdown athe ATI hot key poller, in essence you can do it either way. As I have a Crossfire system I just set my clock speeds with CCC and leave my XTX alone. Hence I don't need the overclocking function of ATItool.

The easiest way to set the fans is, select the device, set the fan speeds, then save the profile. Use the smartkey function to save you settings then you can quickload your settings if you require.

I have set my fans to come on at full pelt at anything from 70 degrees upwards, and have not had an error since.

If you find that setting the fan to 100% at 70 degrees does not cure the issue, then it's more than probable that the psu is not upto the task of running your system.

The rails for the Xclio series @ 480w show 18 amps and 15 amps respectivley.

Sometimes the ratings are not really indictive of real world capabilities (putting it nicely).

One of these 2 issues (that others have already mentioned) are almost certain to be the cause. My experience with these cards has shown this to be the case time and time again. I now run a 900w Tagan psu for my system and it is totally issue free (as it should be as this is incredible overkill).

I also have a Sesonice S12 600w and even that did not like the 1900's Crossfired, I have a 4800 X2 cpu, at the time had around 7 case fans and 2 HDDs. It would sometimes bsod, as it's a real heavy load.

It's a shame that you don't have access to another more powerful PSU, as this would help nail the issue. The PSU's mentioned by others above are most certain to work, but the XCLIO is a relative newcomer to the ATI 1900 scene so we cannot be certain that it's definatley ok for the 1900 cards..

Im not hijacking your thread or that mate but it seems pointless to start another 1 :p . I have this psu : Thermaltake PurePower 560W Silent Power Supply and i was wundering if it will be good enough for the X1900XT

Thank you very much for all your help. I found that if, in ati tool, i clocked the speeds etc of the card down then it would perform ok.

What psu can you recommend getting for around £60?

Thanks.

Its just come up with an error in source :\

'HL2.exe has encountered an error'

Anyone have any ideas please?

Thats actually a known bug in the Source-Engine, the last update fixed it for me but unfortunately gave other users the problem.

Check out the official steam thread for more help, it dates from 10-10-2005 to the present day(69 pages and counting  )--> Official HL2.exe error thread
