right, running ati tool and rthdribl to test for any errors and atrifacts i notice that the card is not clocking up to its full speeds and is sticking to its 2d speeds. why is this?
Just post ** 3dmark scores and everyone can then tell u if its working ok. Even the makers of ATItool, and other overclockers have trouble when it comes to 2d/3d speeds, so ** not alone.

Not sure how to explain it (was looking for a real world equivalent), but its like a paradox, as soon as u check to see the 3dspeeds, then u've got to 2d and its changed back to 2d.

If ** quick on ATItool, then u can refresh it and it holds the 3dspeeds, but refresh it again it will be 2d. U cant win forget about it! ;)

I broke down after I bought the x1900xt, and now just use the catalyst control center, previously religiously seeking the modded control panel version. If it was official from ATI and I had the choice, I would use the control panel; but AFAIK, u stick with 2d speeds by default with the control panel. ATItray tools, also defeats the object for me in that there is an unnecessary executable running while Im playing games; which in my experience is always a bad thing.

thats what it gets in 3dm05 at stock speeds.

If u check my sig, u will find that the last time I ran 3dmark 05 I got 11.1k. I also have an opteron @ 2.7Ghz, stock RAM speeds. 600points could be down to optimisation of the operating system/reinstall ect.

I would doubt ** card is running at 2dspeeds. Im sure Ill be corrected if Im wrong by a 3rd party, but very roughly, the percentage drop from 3d to 2d speeds is more than the percentage drop from my score to ** score.

IIRC 3dmark05 once ** not "cpu bound" then 3Dmark05 pays little attention to CPU speed, so ignor the 200Mhz difference betweent he 2 CPUs. My 2cents.

operating system im running is xp X64. dunno if that makes any difference.

gonna fire up this crapalyst control center and see what it does now.

Replace the stock cooler with a Zalman one.....the stock unit is noisy and not very good!

Other than that its an excellent card!

yea stock cooler sounds like a jumbo jet as soon as the core goes over 80c.

will probably slap my vf900cu on it one day

this HQ AF option is good. set it to force 16x all the time.
