x1900xt performance in vista?

don;t know why anyone would want to dual boot unless there is some real specific software what does not work on one opterating system but works on the other.

So that they could learn the workings of Vista whilst still being able to boot into XP to maintain productivity? :)

guess thats valid enough.

i got to say though the icons in vista are just plain beautiful.

Hey guys i figured people posting in these thread are all x1900xt users so it seemed a good place to ask!

Im currently running Vista Ultimate with an X1900XT
(other specs, 2 gig OCZ ram, AMD 64X2 4400+, ASUS AX8 Mobo, Thermaltake Mambo case(think its call that)

And recently ive noticed some staggering temps from the X1900XT.

Most recently whilst playing the Lost Planet demo temps would reach 107 degrees C (played through half the demo then alt -tabbed to check in ati tool.. this is with fan set to 100%)

I can only think its possible due to poor circulation in my case, theres only the pre-installed rear fan , the fan that the graphics card has and the CPU fan.

I mean, can poor circulation really account for 107degrees?!

edit, just looked at cooling options and found theeeese

and

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SY-002-AR&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=787

would these be worth it? they seem pretty cheap and the reviews are good.

also did another halfway run through the demo again and checked the temps and the temprature of voltage regulator was at 90degrees C.

just trying to provide as much info as possible

Junpei,

Did you get these sorts of temps under XP? My x1950 Pro 512mb AGP card died with Vista X64 installed. It was running fine under XP but one day after a particularly hard bout of gaming, I minimised the game came back 20 minutes later, tried to restore the game and it died completely. I wasn't sure if it was temp related...

vista runs aero 3d so gfx card will run in 3d mode all the time hence your cooling better be up to scratch otherwise there will be overheats.

as for cooling get the hr-03, its the best your gonna get for the x1900xt without going to water.

used to top a about 85-90 in XP, which was fine, played games no problems, could vista realy cause a 20c extra on the temp :/ ?

thanks for the info cyber mav, what about those heat sinks though?

I don't know, I think it might have been x64 but i do wonder about whether the drivers allowed the fan to spin right up as it was still quite qiuet under load even in the middle of a game... Either way I am waiting for my RMA and then I will go back to Vista and see if that makes a difference.

well i had ATI Tool running my fan at 100%, but im gonna buy that hr-03 and stick the 92mm fan on it, as it seems that works wonders

Easily. You can get pockets of air that don't move, they just heat up. A standard case, especially with a high end GPU should have a fan blowing air into the case at the front, and a fan pulling air out at the back, that way you get a through flow of air. At the moment you're pulling air in to the case through all the vents (whichever is easiest for the air) and then sucking it out through the rear fan. The front of the case won't get much airflow at all (if any) and the rear is getting a teeny bit, very poorly routed.

So get a fan into the front of the case!

currently the side of my case is off and theres a desk fan blowing through the case pointed to the back , and the heating still occured, no difference

There has to be something dodgy with either your case airflow or the fan on the x1900 as my temps never get anywhere near that. Ambient temperature in my room is about 21-23c and the case has a 92mm intake fan at the front and a 120mm exhaust fan at the rear.

Make sure the heatsink/fan on the x1900 isn't blocked with dust. This sounds likely if you still get the problem with the side off and a desk fan pointed at it. You might also want to check that the heatsink is seated properly on the x1900 and hasn't come slightly loose. It might be worth taking it off, cleaning the old thermal material and applying AS5 then re-attaching it.

i have decided to purchase the HR-03 and a zalman 92mm fan to stick on it,

i cleaned all the dust off the card last night , theres a fair ammount in the fan, but i didnt fancy taking the heatsink off without having any off the stuff to reattach it on hand.

couple days and my HR-03 will be here, i'll post new temps when i get it.

mid post edit -

i just ran ati tool artifact scanner for 10 minutes (apparently this is sposed to really heat up *** cards) and it maxed at 88 degrees. s maybe im just pushing really hard hehe

Hi gents

Been reading through this thread, other than Vista 64bit seeing 4gb of RAM is there any other performance benefits to 64bit over 32bit in and out of gaming?

Cheers ;)

only 2 other things i can think off, the AMD dreadnought demo and farcry 64. thats all.

also does anyone use traytools with vista x64? noticed that there is no version out that works on vista 64, is CCC behaving properly in vista 64?

only thing i hated with ccc in xp was that if you run a windowed 3d app the clock speed would stay in 2d mode and would never go into 3d mode unless a fullscreen 3d app was run.

currently got vista x64 running now, just slapping my apps back on to it.

I'd like to know about tray tools aswell?

May just put 32bit on for the time being? Until I upgarde and get 4gb later this year...

Great looking O/S and driver support is going in the right direction now..

yea, 64bit tray tools is being worked on. guess i can install ccc as a temp solution.

all i got with vista now is just network issues, keeps saying unidentified network, it connected to the network once though so its odd. using wired network too
