X1900XT Question

Hi guys,

I am just building a new system for the living room mainly for films/surfing/media centre etc and a few games. I have been reading up on what gc to choose and it seems like the X1900XT is the way to go.

There are 2 versions on the OC site from me to choose from, they are the HIS ones for the cooling - as follows:

HIS ATI Radeon X1900 XT ICEQ 3 SILENT Heatpipe 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-061-HT) at £187.99

HIS ATI Radeon X1900 XT ICEQ 3 SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-053-HT) at £252.61

At the moment I will only need a single card, not worried about the Xfire - Though I will no doubt go down that route in future.

Will there be a large difference between the 2 cards. I am not too worried about spending the difference if it is worth it.

Cheers

Welcome to the forums. :)

Thres hardly any difference between the 256mb and 512mb depending on the res, at 16x12 the 512mb is ahead by about 4fps (in bf2 with 4xAA/8AF i think), and obviously the higher you go the more the gap will widen, so if your using widescreen resolutions then id say the 512mb would be best, but if its 16x12 or less, then the 256mb would easily do. :)

There's not much between them at all, but if your budget allows it then I would suggest the 512MB model as it will probably help in upcoming games such as Crysis. Welcome to the forums. :)

Yeah thats a good point, will be best for the upcoming titles also. :)

If you are certain you are going to go XFire in the future, surely getting the Master card now rather than later would be the better option. That way, when you want to upgrade, you can get a regular XT instead of trying to hunt down a Master card specifically.

Thanks for the advice and welcome. I have just bought a new LCD tv which I will double up as the monitor. It's a 40inch Sony with a res of 1920x1080 so I guess it's a no brainer that I should spend the extra. I didn't see the point of buying a monitor when I can use the new tv in this fashion :)

I also have a Dell XPS lappy for other stuff when the tv is in use.

Yeah definately get the master first, seen as the x1900's are no more they will become even rarer to find, where as a normal x1900 should'nt be, proabably be able to pick one up second hand or something once places run out. :)

My god games will look absolutely bloody amazing on that thing!! :D

Just get the Crossfire now, it'd be rude not to! ;D

Would this be the correct card to go for then, it doesn't say XT after the X1900 however in the description it states "Powered by ATI Radeon X1900XT - 621MHz"

This is the description.
HIS ATI Radeon X1900 ICEQ3 SILENT Heatpipe ***Crossfire Edition*** 512MB GDDR3 (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-056-HT)

Cheers

yep i agree it will deffo help in crysis at high resolutions, BUT.... from the looks of crysis you will be playing at 1024x768 to get any decent framerate with no AA or AF and at those settings the benefits of the 512mb ram will be non existant.

I think that Crysis will be quite demanding on VRAM with all those high-resolution textures and shaders, even in standard resolutions. Of course, none of us know anything yet, but I think it's best to be covered.

His native resolution will also be 1920x1080, so 512MB is a no-brainer.

Great, thanks all you have made my mind up to spend the bit extra. Is the HIS card the one to go for, I want to try and keep the system on the quiet side.

I am also planning to get the Seasonic M12 600W I take it this will be more than ample for future proofing and provide enough power for Xfire
