X1900XT

Yes it will, depending mainly on resolution. At higher resolutions it won't be held back so much but on lower resolutions (1280 or lower) just turn up the settings to make it work harder and reduce the bottlenecking :)

Are you saying that if it in lower res and the gfx card settings are set to performance over quality then it will actually not work as well ie average frames could be lower then if the card was set to higher setting ie with details, aa, af ramped up etc?

I play CS and i just set my settings to medium details with no AA and Af etc just to keep max fps up but in reality I get ok fps on maps but i suppose my expectation was a little high.

Could that be a bottleneck. To my shame my Opteron still running at stock which of course could be set a lot higher but i guess i am happy with the performance i get atm. Would perforamnce really be that much better if i clocked my pcu to about 2.6-2.8 rather then default?. On a graphical level?

I *think* it might get a slightly higher fps (haven't got such a good card so i'm trying to think about this logically). If you increase the settings then it will increase the workload for the graphics card and bringing it down to a lower level for the cpu to handle, therefore reducing the load on the cpu, allowing it to process more fps. However i think this only really has this effect when the cpu is running at around 3GHz.

Try changing the settings in css and see if that happens. Also try overclocking and see how much difference that makes :)

Been wanting to oc my opteron for ages as the whole point of getting was to get it higher. But sheer laziness and a bit of concern held me back. I have read a lot on how to do it and got some great info from quite a number of posters in this forum and again to my shame i got no exuse :D

You right i am going to do it soon :D

i mainly play counter strike source so will there be much difference from an X850 XT to a X1900XT ?? will the game look any better ? or will i just get high fps ??

I play css at 1280 by 1024 (only because this is the highest res my current card can handle at max settings)

Also will my power supply be good enough ??

Thermaltake PurePower 560W Silent Power Supply

Well i had 7800GT (extreme) before and tbh it made a good difference that noticeable and my old nvidia card wasn't exactly a old or push over in the performance department. IMO it significantly better which is noticeable so don't raise the expectation level too hight as won't part the sea for you or turn water to wine.......i am sure i read that somewhere on the box :D

Oh your PSU is more than fine for a single card solution. Even crossfire should be ok if i remember correctly reading on the box/leaflet

I upgraded from an X850XT to an X1800XT and there was a huge difference even in CSS. It meant I could completely max the settings out and still keep a decent frame rate. It helped out especially on the HDR maps which usually gave my X850 a battering. I say go for it.. It will do you well for a year or so at least and should see you well into the DX10 period:)

That PSU will be fine as well.. I'm running mine on a 500W Seasonic.

Gonna go for it  , HIS X1900XT :D

Btw, I hate then HDR on de_dust it makes it look too bright :p

Go for the cheapeat card mate. Did a lot of reading and can see that they all come from virutally the same manufacturers. The companies (that bother) just debadge the base model and do a few slight cosmetic alterations to make it their own. So unless your going for the ICeQ HIS, then don't bother going for the brand unless your more concerned about the bundel then the card.

Reading from a few sources they all confirm that the x1900xt card is virtually identical even down to the chip + board regardless of the brand.

Yes, but not so much so that it isn't worth getting!

Buy! Buy! Buy!

:D

Seconded, running an x1800 XT 512mb here on a stock 3500+ (2.2ghz), performance is staggering, runs everything maxed even Oblivion, playing that maxed everything in 1280x1024 (TFT) with 2xAA/16xAF+HDR, gets between 30-40fps outdoors, which is perfectly fine. :D

The only reason im going for the HIS is because of the ice q 3 cooler :p , i have a lot of LED's and UV's in my case and it just wouldnt be the same without a HIS ICE Q cooler inside there :p

EDIT : I am actually considering getting the X1800XT 512mb due to my cpu ? Is there a big difference from the x1900 and x1800 ?

I am in the same boat as you undecided but the price difference is so small, the x1800xt 512 is on special this week at £224 with vat, the Connect3D ATI Radeon X1900 XT is £50 more, seems a bargain for that price.

There will just about ALWAYS be better fps at lower resolution. However, the cpu will be the limiting factor, and therefore you might experience just about the same fps at 640x480 as if you were playing at 1024x768.

Get the x1900xt it is much faster than the x1800xt.

Oh i have just been watching 2 realtime ati demos & i was dumbstruck.

The assasin demo wich i thought was prerendered was infact realtime, i was useing the mouse to move the views. Get toyshop as well they are 1800xt demos.

Got mine yesterday great card, god loved playing bf2 again can't belive how much better it is than the 360 one, and oblivion is much better too.

How good are the omega drivers now adays ?
