I just cought a X1950 from overclockers and after I bought it I forgot that I didn't consider my power supply. I think my PSU is about 450w (ill have to check when i get home), i currently have a 6800GT which runs perfectly fine but could anyone tell me is 450w PSU enough.

Ive been reading some reviews, some say their 300w PSU was fine others say there 400w PSU struggled.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm talking about your PSU, not the GPU

Ahh i see, apologies, ive no idea, wouldnt every 450w PSU be the same? i guess not from your question. Oh well ill have to just see if it works then.

would have to be a particularly poor 450W psu to not cope with a 1950 assuming you're not running 12 hard drives or something.

The quality between vendors varies wildly, if its just a generic one it might not be able to handle it.

As you suggested wait and see what happens.

Is every 2 litre engine the same? No. Lower quality PSU's won't be able to provide stable voltage under load.

no there are just 2 internal hard drives and 2 internal CD/DVD drives as well as the 6800GT (currently) but that card is being replaced with the X1950.

Ill try and find details on the PSU tonight when i get in from work

I had a bright idea and called overclockers (where i bought the PSU from) the power supply is better than i thought actually

it is a tagem 480w

It'll be a Tagan and as such will be fine.

Just in case anyone stumbles across this thread, HardOCP did a round up of various mainstream 500W PSUs. Only one (an FSP) actually managed to meet its specs. Failures varied from poor ripple (too much ripple kills RAM, CPU, etc.), poor voltage regulation (causes crashing / lockups) to melting of the case, and the blowing of panels.

It is extremely important you get a good PSU since everything is hooked up to it. Why risk a £500+ PC on a £20 PSU?
