I'm looking to upgrade my GPU so I can play GTA IV Maxed out and also a lot of the newer games.

Current spec as below (the important bits)

* Core 2 Duo E8400 - 4050 Mhz
* IP35 Pro
* 2GB Corsair Cas 4 DHX 6400
* Sapphire X1950 XTX 512mb

I've been chatting to 'Loadsamoney' about cards on MSN but I've still not decided what to get :p

The ATi HD4870 looks a good choice, but the warranty seems a wee bit short and I'm not sure whether to get the 512mb or the 1024mb version..

Are Nvidias offerings better?

What do you recommend? Being an ATi fanboy all my life doesn't help matters though :o

EDIT - Important stuff! I will be gaming at 1280 x 1024 on my Viewsonic VX922.. so is 1gb of ram required on such a card?

I was under the impression that GTA4 cant be maxed out on any current PCs and still run well.

Anyway, i would suggest either 4850 512 or 4870 1GB depedning on how much you want to spend. You may want to wait until the new generation of cards, its been about 6 months since the launch of 4xxx series from ATi

Thanks for the posts guys, I will have another play with the GTA settings later... hopefully I can hang on until the refreshers come out :)

Nvidia seems the better option tbh, 10 years warranty for a few quid more?

1 to 2 years warranty on the ATi stuff seems far too short.

4850 is more than enough for your current resolution. My advice would be buy a 4850 and with the savings made put it towards buying a new monitor sometime next year when you have the money.

I have more than enough money to buy 20 new screens ;)

Unfortunately I have a terrible habbit of holding onto my pennies and a 19" TFT is big enough for me :D

I'm going to hold out for the refreshers next year and hope that they have more than 1 years warranty on them.

wouldnt it be better just to get an xbox360 ?

:confused:

No, because he can't use that as a graphics card inside the PC that he has purchased the game for.

This isn't a "should I buy the game on system a or b" thread, he is asking how to improve performance on his PC version of the game. Which does look better than the console versions from what I have read (though still is pretty ugly) and you don't have to deal with 30FPS I believe (ok 33 on the 360).

I am using the X4850 and loving it, but I haven't kept up to date on the GPU wars in a few months - but it is playing Dead Space, Tomb Raider Underworld and more at 1920x1200.

Oh and yes, I do actually own the game on my 360 - but I barely played it :o been busy with too many other games, which reminds me I need to by Resistance 2 as well :(

Hmm.. I'm getting impatient now and am rather itching to drive down to Ocuk for a card :eek:

I'm stuck between the 4850 and the 4870.. I need pushing one way or the other :(

the game works perfectly with me.

you need to have the right priority settings for the processes on the cpu otherwise windows wont allocate it enough processor time that is all.
