X1950Pro AGP – Driver support?

Hi

I’m looking to upgrade my gfx card and this looks like the best buy. However, I’m confused over some of the posts I’ve been reading while doing searches regarding driver support for the AGP model.

As far as I can tell the AGP model isn’t getting any more driver support – is this true? And if so will that not make the card defunct with future games etc if there are graphical problems?

I really like the look of this card & it seems great value for money – but if it’s not getting the diver support anymore is it still a viable card as an AGP option?

I’m hoping I’ve misinterpreted some posts – if someone could set me straight on the facts it would be appreciated.

Cheers.

on xp, there have been problems with the 7.8s and the 7.9s. i'm not sure about the latest 7.10s.

i use vista32 bit and every single version has worked fine with my agp x1950pro. :)

I forgot to mention that my operating system is XP Pro.

So is it just unintended problems with the the new drivers for the AGP version on XP or has the support stopped?

Thanks for the replies.

Not sure on win XP. On vista, 7.7 work fine. 7.8 and 7.9 gave me BSOD's and no performance gain. On 7.10 i lost marks on 3dmark06. I left them on for a while, as its games that count really, but had the occasional crash. Can't say for sure it was the drivers but, in the end, went back to the higher performing, no hassle 7.7s:D

no it's not intentional. these same drivers still work with old 9200/9500 cards. it will be awhile before x19** series cards aren't supported anymore. :)

7.10 should be fine, no info on driver instructions indicating there are problems with agp, like there were on 7.8/7.9.

Great. thanks for the replies guys.

Thought it strange that a gfx company would stop updating for a certain card - especially one as new as the X1950Pro even if it was an AGP version.

I'll get my order in for one next week - & get the last ounce of power from this system before an upgrade later next year.

Is there a make which is a better clocker than others?

Also this is my first ATI card - do they supply a clocking process within the supplied drivers?

Thanks again.

Ive not had any driver problems yet, touch wood, and its a cracking card. Download ATi Tool for clocking, but you may not get much more out of it. My stable was 620mhz just testin it up from 570.

Ive got the sapphire version, and its been rock solid.

Even the latest cats say "game y: improvement of x% in X1000 series cards" or words to that effect - so I would expect the X1950pro to be included in that and gain some or all of the benefits (but not the xfire ones of course).

Excellent!

Thanks again guys for all your replies.

Ordered the Sapphire version earlier, hopefully will arrive tomorrow, and downloading the 1.10 drivers as i type.

I'll try the ATI clocking tool when it's stable - i'm hoping i wont have to do a complete reinstall as I have Nvidia in the system at the mo.

As mentioned earlier, it's my first ATI card - will a driver clean prog be enough to get rid of everything Nvidia for a hastle free install?

Additional: Does the 'Catalyst Software Suite' offer anything that i would essentially need or is just the 'Display Driver' enough? (I like bare bones drivers normally but if the suite has clocking software included i would probabl use it.)

Ewanb75 - what tool do you use for clocking your card?

I recommend just the display driver and ati tray tools. I have the x1950 pro as well, although the HIS version, with a larger cooler and it's factory overclocked (something I would have done myself, if I knew what I Was doing back then) and I can say, I love it, although I'm wanting to get a new card for christmas.

Yeah, ATI Tray Tools is a little program that sits in the system tray and doesn't use many resources. It's basically a little less intuitive than Catylist Control Center, but more powerful and has a much much smaller footprint on your computer.

just so you know it wasnt the 1950 card as such, ati had problems with the 7.8/7.9 drivers for the AGP model itself, some people could use them ok, but far more had issues with them so they didnt recommend upgrading to 7.8/7.9 if you're card was AGP.

Thanks again for the replies and thanks for confirming the finer details mp260767 - makes sense as to the confusion people were having in other threads i read.

Installed the card today. Deleted Nvidia files using default tool & then used driver sweep in safe mode. Then installed the 1.10 Cat drivers.

So far everything seems ok - tested a few games and everything seems to be running smoothly.

Thanks again for all the advice and info - hopefully i'll get another year out of this rig thanks to, what appears to be, a great value card.
