X1950XTX + ?? - Crossfire solution needed

Hi all, my first post on these forums have been viewing for a while. Thought this was the best place to ask this question.

I currently have a Ati radeon X1950XTX with an Asus A8R-MVP crossfire enabled motherboard. What are my options for a second graphics card to run in crossfire mode with the X1950XTX?

I'm looking to spend around £100-£200 on the card so could I say use a X1900 card?

If you could give me a list of cards that are compatible with the X1950XTX for crossfire mode and also your own personal suggestion then that would be great.

Thanks a lot

X1950XT Mastercard.
Apparently you can run two 19xx normal cards in crossfire but in software mode, but you lose performance.

Could go down Crossfire too, but extra heat & noise, probably not worth it. My bet a couple of gens from now a single card will outperform X1900XT Crossfire.

Just to clarify my X1950XTX is a "master card". So are you saying I can only run it in crossfire with another X1950XTX? That would be very pricey and also for some reason ocuk don't stock it anymore. Anyone know why this is?

Another question is about compatibility of some games with crossfire, is there any known issues in games such as World of Warcraft that I should be aware of? Haven't heard any but wondered if anyone

ah right if you have a X1950XTX mastercard, just pickup a X1950XTX non mastercard, probably go for around £100. 19xx series are now previous gen.

I don't know if you can use a 29xx series, there was something about physics/3D acceleration with that type of setup.

There is a X1950XTX Master Card!? Never knew that!

You need to buy another X1900XT/X1900XTX or X1950XT/X1950XTX.

My opinion is to sell the card and get a new gen card.

well when I bought the card from OCUK a few months back it stated it as a master card. Is there any way to tell? My card appears to have 2 sockets for monitor outputs. I have seen pictures of an X1950XTX with a monitor output and a funny looking port which i'd imagine is somethign to do with the crossfire wire.

EDIT: the whole reason i bought the card was because i thought i might want to get a second one a few months later i hope they did send me the master card!

I "think" it has 2 of the same port but will inspect when i get home from work. If this is the case am I right in thinking this is a slave card? Therefore I need to buy a x1950xtx master card?

If this is the case would you be able to kindly point me in the direction of a decently priced site (£200) for acquiring one as OCUK don't appear to stock them anymore.

If your card is a standard X1900XTX you'll need a mastercard.
I can't link to any retailers, against forum rules.

What PSU do you have?

From looking around on the net, the mastercards are out there, but they carry a very hefty premium (that is if that's what you need, otherwise the normal X1950XTXs are around £100 cheaper).

If you really want Crossfire, i'd suggest getting it second hand or it's going to cost you an arm and a leg. Otherwise you could sell the X1950XTX, put the money to it, and you'd be in 8800GTX territory then.

Buit if you do, do it now, while they still command a semi-decent price. Should be able to get £125-150 for it IMO.

will check PSU when i get home.

One last question. If I purchase a x1950XTX mastercard will it come with the cable required to link the 2 cards together or do i have to buy this seperately?

It should come with it, make sure it does. If you buy second hand also make sure supplied (a seller had a X1900XT mastercard but with no cable on market a while ago)

Thanks for the advice, will look into this option route if I fail to get a decent price for a x1950XTX master card.

Dont think you can do master cardless crossfire on the old Asus A8R MVP board, only the later RD580 boards like the A8R32 can do master cardless crossfire as both lanes run at 16x, where as on the old A8R MVP both lanes only run 8x as that boards the old Rd450 chipset so a master card will be required for crossfire, but as said above i wouldnt bother, sell the card you have and get a single new gen card like an 8 series. :)

Its already outperformed now by a single GTX.

But that's higher total cost (if I were to sell my card, still need £250 more) but for existing X1900XT just another £100, and how close is X1900XT to 8800GTX?

Somethings the X1900XTX beats it, others it gets absolutely smashed.

I tried Software crossfire with a X1900XT and it was awful on my 16x 4x mobo.

Don't bother.

Get a HD2900XT, or a 8800GTS.

Seen this posted a few times, however it's just plain untrue.

Sure, Crossfire is not worth the heat, power, cost, or hassle, but it IS FASTER.
