X2 3800+ or 4200+

Sweet, what mobo are you running that on?

DFI NF4 Ultra-D.

All the 06xx chips are doing well, but i was lucky to catch an 0601 UPMW. They are the bees knees.

Basically, with a 3800, the minimum OC seen at the minute is about 2.6ghz, with most people pushing 2.8ghz. And this is under air/water i hasten to add, nothing really over the top.

the retail 3800x2's are the better stepping for overclocking than the oem. I paid a premium for the retail as i knew it was better even though i will never need the heatsink.

Thanks mate, i will go for the retail part then. At least i have a spare fan if ever i need it.

what fsb/x u using to get that?..2.8gig from a 2gig cpu is pretty impressive..

yeah i reverted back to stock cooling the other day (water cooling was a bit loud).

Even with the stock fan (not the cool heatpipe jobby, the dull one) i am currently doing 2.4ghz with stock volts and it's loading at 47c. SP2004 stable.

2.5ghz is an absolute doddle.

Still not sure which one to get.

Am really leaning towards the 4200+ as im guessing the higher multi will aid in overclocking.
My board tops out at 267HTT, so if i got a 3800+ that would give me 2.67Ghz ( assuming the cpu is a decent clocker ) but the 4200+ would give me almost 3Ghz.

At worst im hoping i can get it to 2.7Ghz the same as my current 3700+

Suppose its down to whether your prepared to spend the extra £60 for the 4200? Even then what overclock you get will be down to whether you get a good stepping cpu or not, so just because the 4200 has a 11x multi, it still may not clock as well as a good stepping 3800

My 4200+ went up to 2.7 on stock voltage and cooling, managed to push 2.8 after some basic water cooling, which also cools my SLI cards, so I didn't expect too much from it!
