X2 3800 or X2 4400 ?

I have a dilema (probably not an uncommon one). I've not really had much experience with overclocking and I can't decide whether to get a X2 4400 for save a bit of cash and get the X2 3800 and attempt to overclock it. Is water cooling essential to overclock and still have a stable system or not ? What difference will the cache make (3800 only has 512k - 1mb on 4400) ?

Any help appreciated.

No you don't need to go WC to overclock, see my sig. Overcloking with air is fine, and stable. It just depends how much you want to overclock. The extra cache is apparently equal to 200mhz faster CPU.

Overclocking is pretty easy, it's my first proper attempt. You just set fast CPU timings (if not mobo not picked up correct settings) then to increase the CPU FSB. Play it safe with a couple of hundred megahertz.

the 3800

its really easy to overclock and air cooling is fine,

i have a 3800 running at 2.5ghz and its rock solid, dont worry about the overclocking cos im sure everyone will give all the help you need right here ;)

asus a8n-sli premium, i wouldn't recomend it for overclocking tho.

vcore fluctuates a lot and it only gives 1.5 vcore which isn't enough for me as my chips default vcore is 1.4v.

Now that the Opteron 165 has been chucked in there, what do people think about that ? Still quite a bit cheaper than the 4400...

/edit - If I was going to overclock would I need special RAM or would 2GB of the Geil Value be OK ?

This is for a new system so motherboard etc has not been purchased yet although i'll probably get a DFI m'board.

I'm trying to get a new board for mine as it has a HTT limit of 270 and I reckon the chip will go higher. The only downside is the 9 multi whereas the 3800x2 has a 10 multi but half the cache. The optys should also run cooler.

And why not?
My friend got his FX57 to 3.7gig on the Asus Premium, its fine for clocking if you know what your doing.

I could also never decide between the X2 3800 or the 4400. :o

The 4400+ has 229 million transistors whereas the 3800+ has 154 million transistors, not sure what difference that will make but it's a difference i've spotted

It would certainly be interesting to see what the real differences between the two chips actually are, at least where performance is concerned.

sure your not looking at a single core 3800 there ?.. if not its prolly just the extra cache

I use this chart to see the performance difference between cpus. You can easily change the benchmark. You can see that the 4400+ is quite a bit faster in some programs but this should be easy to make up by overclocking.

You can get the OCWbeta 2 or 7 bios for the asrock dual which removes the htt limit.

But if the X2 4400 was clocked aswell, surely it would be faster then a clocked 3800 due to the extra cache?

Would a 4400+ be able to be overclocked more than a 3800+ since it starts with a greater clock speed in the first place?
