x2 4200 -> Opty 170+

yeah agree depends on cost, I've got a 175 and x2 4200+ and the performance (except in certain multitasking circumstances) is pretty much equal, they're both 2.2GHz.

hmm, but the question was if I could get the Opty to 2.9-3.0 gig would the extra cache and better OC make it worthwhile? Of course they are going to almost the same at the same speeed.

yes the extra speed would come in handly for stuff like video encoding and high definition 1080p playback using software decoding.
also some games like supreme commander would benefit from the faster cpu.

but as mentioned above it depends on the cost. an opteron 175 is a good price to get.

not all 170's can make 3ghz on air.
mine was a right struggle to get stable at 3ghz on water, and it was a fairly good stepping running on a DFI NF4 board also

My comment was more to do with the cache than the clock speed. As one has 512kb and one has 1meg (both per core) the fact they run nearly equal when not multitasking says that to me unless using more than one program is running the opteron would have very little gain over the x2 (at the same speed)

Thanks, so when is a 2mb cache useful hmm, cpu limited games and muti-tasking I guess. If I can get one for around £50, it might be a fun upgrade until the main one next year. If not, doesn't appear worth it.

I'd chance the £50.

At worst you can sell it on for little ot no loss. At best you'll get a better clock and sell your X2.

To be honest 3GHZ on a Opty dual core is quite rare, I have one of the best stepping ones here in a spare rig and it does 3GHZ at a push on good water cooling, 2.8 is more like what you will achieve.

What stepping out of interest? CCBBE 0615EMPW here :) Mine'll do 3.05GHz, temps even on air weren't a problem but I couldn't get it stable for whatever reason and as I'm impatient, I settled for 2.8GHz!

Mine was an earlyish 170, a CCBWE 0550UPMW from the 408L batch

Im so sad I still have pics of it :rolleyes: was a great chip though!

Stock voltage and still made 2.8ghz on stock cooler :)

It would run dual prime stable all day long at 3ghz with just over 1.4vcore, but only on better cooling (water)

Mines a CCBWE 0550 UPMW almost all did 3GHZ but I found it needed water to keep it cool at that speed.
