X2 4200 temperature question

Hello all.

Fitted this CPU last Friday and it is running like a dream. Have noticed that under sustained gaming the temp hits the mid fifties.

Is this reasonable? I'm using a standard Akasa heatsink/fan for cooling. Toying withe the idea of getting something a little better, though.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

My 4400 doesn't go higher than 47 degrees, and that's with it overclocked to 2.7ghz Might want to check fitting/case cooling/cpu fan

I think you've got a much more robust cooling setup with your rig. I've tended to be a bit relaxed due to the fact that I had an old socket 'A' hitting 60 with a smile on its face a couple of years back.

Could you suggest a decent cooler that doesn't require me to remove the mainboard?

In my X-Pack SFF micro-atx case my X2 4200 hits an idle temp of 40c and a full load temp of 50c.

I'd look first at improving your case air flow before getting a new heatsink and fan. My case temp is normally about 35c so getting better cooling in my case would make minimal difference. No matter how good your CPU cooler it can't cool the chip lower than the case temp. Any reduction in case temp will reduce the temp' of every component so is a better overall solution.

Fitted my x2 4200 the other day, using a Artic freezer pro. It idles at around 25-27, peaking at around 40 under load.
I will say this though, fitting that freezer pro must have taken 3 hours. Never in my life have I had such difficulty in fitting a cooler. It's a miricle the cpu still works after the beating it took getting the cooler on.
Came so close to throwing the whole thing at the wall

that really puts a n00b like me off from buying an uprated cooler

Akasa EVO-120 is awesome. With PowerNow/Cool N Quiet, i get about 31 idle, sometimes lower (as low as 26 at some times). Without it, i get about 34 idle. Under load (Folding@Home on both cores at max for 6 hours+), i get about 50. It's a good cooler.

it really depends on the case cooling before you go and buy a new cpu cooler

if it has good airflow then get a new cooler if not upgrade the case cooling see if the temps are good if still not good change the cpu cooler

i got opteron 165 oc to 2.8ghz from 1.8ghz

use freezer64, easy to fit imo

idle =38c
gamming load=53c
max load 60c

its fine dont worry

I've just happened accross the Freezer 64 Pro. Looks like it fits the bill.
Thanks.
