X2 4800+

Hi there.

I have an Athlon 64 3000+ running at default speed at the moment on Asus A8V Deluxe v2.
Can't afford to completely upgrade my system so need to stay socket 939 (assuming my motherboard will accept the new cpu?).
Is it worth me getting the X2 4800+? How well do they OC?

Well, i dont know about this CPU personaly, i just went from 3700+ to X2 4200+ and apart from High temps than i would like, its cool, i have heard that with stock cooling you may have a hard time overclocking. as for the board, you may need to Update the BIOS, and that can be a pain in the A*S, but Dual core is awsome.

That will be a nice cheap upgrade if you only have to relace the CPU, and you'll see significan performance advantages

My experiance overclocking a 4800+ was pretty lame. I got 2650mhz. No more. Would still be classed as a high end performer tho.

I do have a big-assed thermaltake heatsink on there with a 120mm fan.
Can't remember which one (whichever was deemed the best in Feb 05 ) but I'm pretty sure it's better than the current stock cooling.
I'll just be upgrading the CPU and probably putting in another gig of RAM.
I'm not looking for anything insanely good - just something to up my score on Vista's WEI. lol

True. But the machine could do with a bit more oomf.
My 6800 may be outdated but I'm sure it's being held back by the CPU/RAM.

I went from an A64 3200+ @ 2.6ghz to a 4800+ @ 2.75ghz(ok a crap clock speed gain) , I havent regretted the upgrade though , I'm well impressed with it in windows , ripping , unpacking and general multi tasking is superb , all those things were a nightmare on the 3200+.
Its luck of the draw with the overclocking side of things , mine doesnt run hot as its on water but it aint a great overclocker although I could do with more vcore I think(only have to 1.5v ) , you could try sourcing the equivalent Opteron(i think 2.4 ghz is opteron 180 and 175 is 2.2ghz equivalent to X2 4400+) which usually overclock a little better.

Waste of money.

Depends if you do heavy CPU multi-tasking, ie encoding x 2, encoding plus gaming etc.

I've heard the faster X2's don't clock that well, it might be better to get the slower ones and clock them up. I can get 2.7 on my 2.2 4400x2 with +200mv (1.52/3v)
