I'm thinking of purchasing one of the two chips above. I'm also interested in overclocking (first time overclocking a processor) and these two chips caught my eye because apparently they're very good and very simple for it.

Apparently you can oc the 5000+ in about 5 minutes using appropriate software to set a 15x multiplier and get 3.0ghz out of it with only air cooling? If you then want to go further you need to change the cpu voltage which allows you to up the clock speed to approx 3.2ghz..

So being a bit of a noob I have a few questions about overclocking and cooling...

1) What program do you use to a) set the multiplier? b) change the core voltage? I'm guessing changing the core voltage has to be done through BIOS but the multiplier can be changed through my OS?

2) I assume this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-006-SY along with some arctic silver paste will be appropriate cooling?

3) I already own some decent memory: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat= so I'm guessing I'll be able to get better timings out of it than my current setup allows?

Please excuse my ignorance and thanks for the help. o7

Ok thanks, anyone know how the 6400+ compares for overclocking? Is its multiplier setting 'unlocked' like the 5000+ ?
No, the multi on the 6400+ is locked at 16. I'd go for the 5000+ black edition personally, it's made on a newer process than the 6400+ and so should run cooler, use less juice etc plus most people manage to get 3.2-3.3GHz out of them at least.

The 6400 is also a Black Edition and its unlocked (so Im told), and locked only means upwards, you can always go lower and raise FSB.

Any normal 6000 does 3300mhz at least (I had 2 of them) and although the 5000 is 56nm is far lower clock and will be harder to get to 3300mhz, the 5600 also 56nm can clock aswell as some 6000's. (3300mhz-3500mhz).

Somneone here has a 6400 and got 3500mhz out it with no issues (unsure if thats stress stable)
