x299 Worth doing?

Its upgrade time again

Usually I upgrade the gpu, then two years later the cpu/mobo/memory, then two years later the gpu again, etc etc, so my hardware is expected to last around four years. I currently have a 6700k (4 years old), and a 1080ti (2 years) - I mention that only so it's apparent I buy with an eye on longevity.

My build is more workstation than gaming, I do a lot of CAD and Rendering

I'm currently thinking of something like an I9 9900X (s2066) - any reason why I shouldn't?

Absolutely not. Dead end and expensive platform.

3950x cheaper and performance is just as good in many cases.

Just checked and an I9 9900x is going for £500, the 3950x is £750 - that's a big difference

Well you're comparing a 10c intel Vs. a 16c amd.
A fairer comparison is Vs the 3900x 12c.
Not to mention the mobo

depends on your budget, but if it were me i'd go amd all the way, the cpu's are monsters and best of all they use next to no power thanks to the use of 7nm vs 14nm, yes the gap is smaller once overclocked but intel hasnt got anything real to offer compared to amd.
if your looking at mostly gaming then i'd say go for a 9900k and overclock that cpu, remember core clock is the main advantage for gaming but you have to concider power and heat, intel in this senario loose heavily as once overclocked most if not all cpu's pull a fair amount of power and run pretty warm compared to amd's offerings.

as you say above you'll be doing mainly cad work and rendering which if this is the case go with a 3900x or a 3950x and a mid range x570 mobo, prices for both setups would be around £750 - £1100 and would offer far greater cpu horse power than anything from intels hedt plus amd's chips will consume lower power which is a win win.

if your not fussed with a budget then go for the 3960x threadripper as many reviwers say its a intel killer, the performance is simply outstanding and leaves intels 10980x in the dirt and comes pretty close to the 3175x from intel which is a 2k cpu on its own.

end of ther day the choice is yours, if you feel intel is better then go with it, but for similar amounts of money you can get better performance

The last AMD cpu I had was a Duron.
I don't follow tech like I used to. Years ago I could quote my specs down to memory timings - these days I have to google what socket I'm on.

The 3900x is something I will take a look at - thank you
