I've just noticed the new X3 game is coming out soon and I was curious about it, the videos look very nice with impressive graphics etc, but no hint of gameplay or UI. I've never played an X game and am wondering how I would get on with it. My space game experiance is kinda limited so not sure what to compare to. I've played Freelancer to death, played Eve as a miner, played the rts space sims like sins and homeworld.
Do people who've played this series think I may enjoy it? What are the objectives and game style?

Its very similar to Eve, I call it Eve Offline.

Its inspired by Elite, a typical play session will see you navigating through star systems, doing missions, trading, warding off pirate raids...

Its incredibly slow to get going and tbh I haven't reached the point where the game has really hooked me.

I'd say the learning curve is steep, but the basics are easy to grasp if you've played something similar (ie eve).

there isnt so much of a learning curve as there is a learning cliff lol.

Yeah I heard this lol. I'm hoping after a stumbling start its nice and rewarding. The main problem with eve was a horrible UI, I'm praying this one will be easier to use.

If you have a look on youtube and search for "X3TC walkthrough" there is a series of videos that really helps when you first star the game. Its more than enough to get you hooked

Going ok so far following those vids. Done some basic trading, got a few ship upgrades (best buy and sell locations, ship speed boost etc). Buying low selling high etc on solar panels. make about 20-25k profit per trip and the guy on the vid wants us to make 750k by next vid lol. Thats a hell of a jump.

Sounds like the guides are good (cant check as at work), once you've got enough cash to get yourself a couple of sector/universe traders and one or two stations (hint - 1mj shields, IRE forge, stuff like that sells by the bucket load) and some ships servicing them you can go off and do anything you like whilst making decent amounts of cash.

I've started playing albion prelude after leaving terran conflict for a few months, quite satisfying building things up again but takes a lot of time - also didn't realise I was getting a free centaur and had just splashed £5m....doh!

If you're still trading by yourself then Space fuel and Ore will probably make you the easiest money to build up a stash - also don't over upgrade your automated ships once you can afford to have them

There is no X3 game coming out soon ;)

X3 Albion Prelude is already out and has been since before xmas:p

There is a new X game coming out soon X:Rebirth and is a complete re imagining of the series. Built from scratch it will be nothing like any X game released before.:D

Took me a couple of days playing until I had a sector trader. Left it on for a few hours by itself in SETA and it had gone up by 1.5 mil.

This is a good way to get some cash initially, just need to make sure it's set up in a nice safe system with plenty of things to sell. Only problem is if he buys something then gets in a tizz about it and has to message for help 5 minutes in whilst you bugger off for an hour to do something else!

Ah seta exploiting the beginners way to make easy profffitsss, All though i have never used it exploiting mobile mining is a much better way to get easy profffitsss.

I much prefer turning to piracy the profffittssss can be massive and it will quickly raise your combat rank giving you access to high paying assassination missions.

Herrons nebula, until you've flooded the trading station with space fuel - from there you can go to Ore belt and just sell the ore to surrounding systems, you'll almost always double your money per unit.

Good thing about this is when you find the pirate stations they also buy space fuel, just be careful who you blow up - i.e only kill teladi if you don't buy much from their systems etc

Aww the teladi make such useful ammo based weapons though, works wonders clearing out entire Xenon sectors.

Anyway, i still havent been able to really get a station or complex running right, Im fine with everything else.

Though this next game might change a lot of that, i hope anyway that they can engage more gamers to appreciate space sims, it a genre on the edge of the abyss frankly.
