Check my signature for specs. Basically, my ram can only take 800 Mhz while my CPU I reckon can take 3.8 GHz easy, however, I can't underclock my RAM enough to push the CPU that far, I am being stopped at 3.6, by this time even on the minimum multiplier for the ram it's at 800 MHz... anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried dropping the multiplyer on the cpu?

You will of course have to crank up higher fsb speeds on the motherboard but you may be able to get the overclock you need.

Those X38 boards should easily be ablt to hit 500fsb without breaking a sweat and with the multiplyer on the cpu dropped to 8 and the fsb increased to 475fsb, you would get 3.8Ghz.

Surely the Corsair will hit 900Mhz with a voltage increase and a drop in timings or am I wrong?

I'm not really sure about the ram, however I don't know if this'll solve the problem, if I push up the FSB more, again I'll have to overclock the RAM as I can't reduce it's multiplier anymore :S

Unlike NV boards that allow you to unlink ram Intel chipsets don't so you can't underclock your ram below the system fsb.

Having bought my e8500 i made sure to get PC8000 which would give me the option of running the FSB all the way up to 500mhz.

If you slacken the timings you could probably push higher - all you'd need is 445mhz for a 4ghz clock on trhe e8400.

Roughly how much should I slacken timings bearing in mind my RAM is CAS-4... should I lower to 55515?

many thanks GT, the 55515 worked fine for me, just running orthos on 3.8 now ^^ Will update with progress tomorrow.

Great news, the overclock worked, managed to push the CPU up to 3.85 with the ram overclocked, abit but not too much. The timings are on 55515 and it's all orthos stable for 19 hours. Many thanks for the help GT :D
