Hey, totally new to overclocking, having few problems, hoping some of you guys can point me in the right direction.

Heres the problem, everytime i try and adjust the multiplier in bios i cant get the computer to boot up and need to clear cmos.
Even the slightest change and thats it away.

I can change my FSB, 220 x 16, no problems at all although it does bump my ram speed up to nearly 1600 Mhz. Is this safe? Havent done any testing in this setup as id rather be able to change multiplier.

Mobo - MSI 790GX-G65
CPU - X4 955 BE
RAM - Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333
Cooler - Zalman CNPS9300-AT

Cheers! :)

If it doesn't crash, the memory's taking the hit. If it's crashing/not booting you've pushed it too far or have missed something.

Is the 955 not a Black Edition? If so, it usually makes more sense to multi-overclock.

yeah its a black edition, 200mhz x16 default.
If i change the multiplier to 16.5 or 17 and save settings, computer restarts and wont even reach the bios screen, so i need to clear cmos and start agian.
Only way I can seem to get anywhere is by upping FSB to a max of 228, but as i said id rather use multiplier.
Probably missing something simple here lol
Should i be changing my FSB/ram ratio first? or should this make no difference when adjusting multiplier.

cheers for help

yeah tried overdrive first, same problem, as soon as i touch multiplier game over.
is there any setting i need to adjust before touching multiplier maybe? just puzzles me that i can hit over 3.5 by adjusting FSB, but a tiny increase on multiplier and it wont post.

another thing, my board has an OC swich, if i set it max, in bios it reports my new clock speed, think it was around 3.6. Vista boots no problem but cpu-z reports my old clock speed, 3.2.
Whats correct, bios or cpu-z?
