Hi My wife has had "4x4 system faulty" warning come up on the Idrive on the x5 but then that has gone and there is nothing showing in control faults in idrive (other than washer fluid!)

Do I need to get this looked at? How does it measure? Wondering if the tyre pressure is uneven and that is throwing it off as it would never cross her mind to check.

BMW + lots of electronics = diagnostics at the dealers + lots of money!
Best thing to do would be to get it plugged in and go from there. Being a mechanic I hate seeing threads where people say this, say that, guessing left right and centre. It may cost £100 in diagnostics, but could save you more in the long run

You must be a backstreet mechanic if you don't have any diagnostic equipment in this day and age. Either that or you just work on small French cars.

BMW + lots of electronics = diagnostics at the indy with autologic = saved money

With Indys they refund the diagnostics if there is any work to go ahead with.

I'm a mechanic at a small firm, we use diagnotics, but can't seem to diagnose BMW with much detail. This is down to the kit we use I expect.
I did mean to suggest an indy, forgot about that.

It's under warranty so not worried about cost. I have put a call in to dealer.

Wife is off on a big trip on Monday so could be a grind if it needs work.

As above really, could be anything and will need some examination.

However may be worth adding that a friend of mine had a similar thing with his X5 - the 4x4 system warning light would come on at times and after turning the ignition off and leaving it a couple of minutes it'd start up again with no warnings. It would do this randomly every few days. A bit of scouring the net showed someone else with the same problem which turned out to be a faulty alternator.

He took it to a dealer and they called him up after having had the car for a couple of hours saying that they couldn't find any fault with it. After saying that he'd read it could be alternator related they said they'd go away and do some further diagnostics. Eventually he got a call back confirming it was the alternator.

So while it may or may not be related to your problem it could be worth bearing in mind.

Indy dealers, often just as likely to be clueless as a main dealer if not more so. If you find a good one hang onto them as many are rubbish.

Cooper managed not to return my call in 5 business hours approx, yay Cooper.

Car has been driven a couple of times since and no warning and nothing in the control fault log.

Thanks for the help folks. Will get on to them again.

If they have Autologic then they usually have access to their support staff who in turn have full access to the TSB to help out.

If the indy can't be bothered with this phonecall then they are useless.
