X64 problems

I've recently installed X64 as I heard it will solve a few memory problems I was having in Maya 7.

Which it has but I'm having a lot of problem just browsing the web and watching quicktime movies.

I have tried installing Apple's version of Quicktime, it installs but when I try to run it nothing happens. So i've installed Quicktime alternative and K lite codec pack which enables me to watch .mov movies in Windows Media Classic.

I can't even open the apple/quicktime website without an Buffer Overrun Message which then crashes FireFox and all of the IE's and web browsers just seem to crash at random.

Itunes won't install becuase of a not compatible message but X64 sticky says that it is.

I remember using the beta version and not having any of these problem.

Could it be a duff install?

QuickTime 7.1 (Currently the latest version) does not work on x64. This thread on PlanetAMD64 from late May was discussing this. There are quite a few workarounds these (note that these are quotes, not my ideas):
QT 7.1 works fine on x64, but MS Hotfix for KB908531 kills Quicktime 7.1 (and causes a number of other problems--do a google search for a full list). If you uninstall the hotfix using Add/remove programs and then install Quicktime 7.1 and itunes all will be well. Microsoft is supposedly working on a patch for their patch to fix these problems.
Another Idea
You need to have the standalone installer for quicktime 7.1 found here .
Also make sure you system is set to view hidden files and folders.

1) start the standalone installer
2) start clicking next until you see the screen that says its extracting a bunch of files
3) after it has finished extracting, stop clicking next on the installer, but leave it running
4) look in "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Temp\" for a folder containing a bunch of files, one of quick is called "QuickTimeInstaller.msi"
5) Once you have found that folder, copy it to C:\, for example, I found mine in the folder "_I64"
6) now you can cancel and exit the quicktime installer program that was running
7) click Start --> Run, and enter in the box (msiexec /x "C:\_I64\QuickTimeInstaler.msi") without the parentheses

Make sure the spelling of the files is correct and the folder _i64 corresponds to the folder you found on your system. This does a complete clean uninstall.

Or what I've done is delete QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx in Windows\system32 directory and then use QuickTime 7.0.4 Standalone Installer available here

Hi,

Thanks for the help.

I gave up in the end, I tried the lastest version, an older version and Quicktime alternative.

I've also gone back to XP I got fed of web browsers crashing due to buffer overrun messages. Which meant I couldn't even look at the web.

The beta version ran a lot better than the final version.
