Whats the deal with these CPUs - are they still good when compared to the newer 45nm stuff?

I have one but cant decide whether to move forward to a newer mobo and cpu.

Ta...

P.S. I'm new so I hope I've posted in the right place for this...

Welcome :)

You could get £300+ for the X6800 and get a Yorkfield Quad and a X38/750i motherboard for the money you made.

Depends on what you use the X6800 for at the moment. If its purely for overclocking then I would stick with the X6800 and get a decent motherboard.

Slowly, games are now being coded to be optimized with Quads.

Thx.

Gosh - thats quite a bit of money. I'm surprised they sell for that much when similar performance 45nm ones are £120ish...

I'm not actually clocking it at all as its inn a mATX mobo... it sits happily at stock, but is lapped to get better cooling.

It would be nice to sell it for £300 and get the upgrades you mention. :)

Guys got a x6800 and runs it at stock

I thought the only reason people paid mad money for x processors was the fact that the multiplier is unlocked and they make great overclockers.

Guess that fact missed the op :p

Some people buy them because they are simply the best money can buy... Until overclocking comes into play which is not everyone cup of tea i guess!

Thx.

A lapped X6800 at stock

Your pulling our legs man

Even if its in a mATX case, get that multiplier ramped up to 12 at least.

Its like buying a Ducati and never going above 60mph.

Heehee - my cooling in the case isn't what it should be. I'm running a stock cooler for an e6400 on it (i know, i know). I need to pop on some decent temp monitoring software before I play.

:) Wow I didn't know that?:D Please could you please list the ones that have been. ;) It would also be nice to know the places where we can get the authoritive information on these optimized games.

When I say slowly, I mean in many months.

There is rumour around the net that the Unreal Engine will be coded to use Quads but it takes a lot of skill to apparently do this. They are only just getting around the Multi Core threading.

As previously asked, where is the authoritive list on the games that are being optimised? I am not being picky here, I just need facts. Too many people make sweeping statements on forums about games being optimised for quad cores and in many cases it is "news" to the manufacturers and the coders themselves. A lot of this is pure hype put out by people who have purchased a quad core and try to justify their purchase on these grounds only when they very rarely play games, and when they do, the game that that they play will never be recoded. Lets fact, it, it is just a male testosterone thing where "mine is better than yours" seems to rule when posting about things. With some males it is how big a certain part of their anatomy is, now with others it is I have got a quad and you have only got a dual, and I paid the same money as you did.:D

You do realise that I am posting this so that I can get my posts up to 100 quickly and post in the members section so that I can sell my old e6600 there? :)

Just use a common online auction site....and it's 250 posts and 90 days. Read the FAQ better.

More and more games are being released to take advantage of quad core processors, and developers are tending to lean towards programming for multi threads. Old games are unlikely to be re-coded to run well on quad cores....but then most of them don't even need to. Its only next generation games like crysis that are actually programmed to use quad cores, but there the new games every will want to be able to play.

Oh and for the record, i have a dual core processor. Not a testosterone fuled e-penis enhancing post

As I asked of someone previously. Provide a list then! I was not doubting anyone, ;) Just need the list!

I dont remember referring to you! But if you wish to feel that you are in that category, who am I to argue. :D

I seriously doubt anyone had a complete and accurate "List".

Two games i know are Supreme Commander and Unreal Tournament 3. Whether any other Unreal engine 3 games lean towards Quads i have no clue.

.

I doubt it either, however, there appears to be so much hype about this, I just wondered if hidden away somewhere there was a list that someone had compiled.

Also Crysis has been quoted?

interesting to know! but u gave me a headache now, stick or sell?? :o

just for info i paid a lot less than that for an x6800 over 18 months ago :D , had no idea they were still selling for high prices. i know at the time i got mine they were selling for £600 on ebay, i saw it as a bargain rather thean a chance to make some money heheh, what a fool :*(

Could be, never played it nor tested it myself though so i don't know ~_^

What i am curious about are Unreal engine based games, as UT3 is getting aboost from Quads does that mean that the engine itself is easily capable of doing that or is it simply the fact that UT3 being based on a consoles which are multi threaded made its way to the PC version? Anyone tried benching Gears of War for the PC? or any other Unreal engine 3 games?
