X79 vs Z77

It depends which CPU you get, 3820 seems to be a slightly worse clocker than 2700K but has a few benefits (more PCI-E lanes, quad channel), 3930K is in a league of its own really but only if you can make use of the two extra cores.

Difficult one as I use the PC for a mixture of things.

Out of the G1 Assassin 2 X79, vs the Sniper 3 Z77 - One must perform better than the other? (Assuming both were running the best chipset availabe)

Would the Z77 still be better than the X58 for gaming? If so, it would def be better for multitasking and would be the obvious choice?

Most people will find a Z77 platform more than adequate. The only people I'd advise to get a X79 setup are people that alredy know they'd need it for their use.

There are a lot of people buying into X79 thinking they "need it", when in actual fact, they just "want it". It's a hell of a cost just for the kudos of it all.

Do you want a list? lol

Going off your earlier reply, Im going to take it the G1 Assassin 2 would be the better contender, esp for multi threaded use. Im just curious if its also going to better for gaming than the X58 series as well?

I only asked this originally as I've got a really good offer on either board, otherwise I wouldnt have considered upgrading from my current setup.

Thing is, you would prob say that they were not intensive enough. Photoshop/Lightroom is prob as intense as its gets, Im certainly not using CAD or anything.

However, as I can get either mobo at a very good deal.. (Basically I need to choose between the two) im going to take it the better option would be the z77 g1 sniper 3.

If you're mostly gaming then go for the Z77. Then you can use the rest of the money for other areas such as a beefier GPU or a nicer looking case.

do a rough build with both setups, see what they come to, and if the difference isn't justifiable then go for the Z77 and some extras, if there is little in it, then go for the one you feel happier with.

so if you were buying a pc from scratch today would people rather go with the x79 3820 cpu or a 2600k and z77 board......i personally think the x79 quad channel is the better option or am i totally wrong is the 2600k a much faster cpu.

The quad channel memory won't make a huge amount of difference, you'll get more performance benefit from 100-200mhz extra cpu clockspeed that a 2600K should provide over a 3820 (from what I've seen).

The main benefit of X79 really is the 40 PCI-E lanes, with a Z68/Z77 you'll get 16 lanes for a GPU (or 8x8 for Crossfire/SLI) and perhaps a couple of PCI-E 1x slots for add-on cards. If like me you have any PCI-E 4x cards the normal Sandy Bridge platform is a bit of a nightmare really, the boards either have bridge chips to emulate extra lanes or you lose stuff like onboard USB3 to facilitate them.

just say you dont overclock its not a backward step is it getting the 3820.

not necessarily a backwards step, more like a sideway step. unless you have software that will utilise the X79 then the Z77 would be the cheaper, therefore better option as it would allow more funds for other things like SSD, Better GFX etc
