hi guys,

looking to pop a new graphics card in my shuttle to make it a bit more game-capable...

is it worth going for a 2600 XT over the likes of the old X800 XT? (AGP)

the rest of the system is a 3.2 P4 with a gig of ram...

Yes, the X800XT is about the same performance level of the 7800GT but without shader 3 support. The 2600XT is comparable to the x1950Pro card.

Make sure you don't get the DDR2 version.

In DirectX 9b (not 9c), the X800XT beats the 2600XT around a bit. I was pretty surprised by how much.

However, it does lack 9c support and won't do HDR unless using the Source engine. The 2600XT has all this, but also native HD decoding, taking the load of your processor.

Don't buy the 2600XT based on its DirectX 10 support, because it can't run any games in DX10 particularly well.

If you want a real performance boost (depending on your CPU, of course) then stump up for the 3850: it's substantially faster than either the X800XT or the 2600XT.

The 7800GT is quite abit better than a x800xt. The X800XT is more like a 6800GT.

Going from a X800XT to a 2600XT wont be a great improvement imo. Look for a X1950Pro or greater for any decent boost.

edit: your not going to get much better than a X800XT for £30

Agreed.

If you've only got £30 to spend, save up... unless you're DESPERATE to play Blu-Ray discs and want HDR.

theres a 2600XT on the MM right now which i'm negotiating for... asking price of £40...

tbh, just want it to play live for speed on nice settings at the mo :p

An x800XT. is a graphics card from the 10th series and it is an 800. the 2600XT is a card from the 12th series and is a 600. So far a start that clears up your going from on OLD mid-high card to a NEW mid card.

May i point out that the x800 beats the x1600 (yes thats right a card from the 11th series that is a 600)

So a 2600XT will probably be a margional victory. Make sure if you 'upgrade' that you buy a GDDR3 Version. 512 if poss.

Edit: and as you got £30, thats not possible, wait and buy a good graphics card later.

I found the X800XT PE to be slightly comparable to the 7600GT tbh as I owned both. The X800XT PE was a bit faster than the 7600GT though with a 256bit interface vs 128bit. This is where the X800XT PE exceeds the 7600GT card but I do admit it's not as powerful as the 7800GT (at times). I'd say it's in-between the 7800GT and 7600GT but leaning more towards the 7800GT side.

The X1950 would probably be the best bet if you can find for a decent price. Not much faster than the 2600XT but it beats it.

Trouble is, he is going to be CPU bound....i had a 3ghz P4 and a X850XT PE and found the games that really needed a X850 really needed a faster CPU as well.

In Source games for example my scores didnt improve that much from when i had a 9800pro with the same processor.

Where as in Battlefield 2 i could add loads of AA and max out the details @1280x1024 with an average 50fps....almost double that of my old 9800pro,so its gonna be a pretty much mixed picture , results wise, with that 3.2 P4 depending on the game...

Good point :). My last Intel build before this rig was a Pentium III 450Mhz, 128mb of memory with an 8.4Gb drive that cost my mum £1,500 odds for my 18th birthday :D.

I went from the XP2400+ to the 3700+ Athlon San Diego with my 9800Pro and boy did my system change. So I had an overclocked 3700+ @ 2.6Ghz which was FX55 speeds by the time I put in my old X800XT PE. This was at the time that AMD were far superior to Intel I suppose so that's why my advice is a bit off. Thank you for keeping me right :).

Off topic// Are you Cooper (Irish?) from Call of Duty Carentan {FP} by any chance?.

well, i've bought a 2600XT AGP off the MM for £40 delivered... can't do much better than that for my money i reckon...

is there any other really cheap upgrade that would be very much worthwhile with my p4 3.2 and 2x512 DDR400 ram?

(do you reckon i've made the right choice?)

I think you've spent £40 for no reason, but that's just my opinion. As we've discussed this further up the thread, I'm not convinced you're really looking for anything other than confirmation of your decision which - tbh - you're not going to get from an objective observer.

Admittedly, this is only from one benchmark site (tomshardware.co.uk VGA charts), but...

Radeon HD3850: 1605.40fps
Radeon 1950Pro: 1243.80fps
Radeon X800XT: 932.90fps
Radeon HD2600XT (w/ GDDR4): 896fps
Radeon HX2600XT (w/ GDDR3): 893fps

This was across Oblivion, Doom 3, FSX, 3DMark06, BF:2142, M&M Dark Messiah, Warhammer: Mark of Chaos, and Prey.

Sure, it wasn't Supreme Commander, Crysis, etc., but it's reasonably indicative.

However, I utterly support your purchase from a 'hobbyist' POV. Nothing like new toys. :)

I recently went from an x800 xl to a HD3650, and noticed only a marginal increase, but I mainly upgraded for the HD decoding. As has been said you now get the more recent shader support, which does look nice in TF2! I meant to do some benchmarking but in my rush to put the shiney new card in my system i completely forgot...

PK!

nonono, someone along the line you've got the wrong idea... i'm not upgrading from an X800 XT, i'm upgrading from a Radeon 9200 (put in the shuttle when it would not have been used for gaming whatsoever)...

my original post said "2600 XT over the likes of the old X800 XT?" not "my" old X800...

so, considering i couldn't find an X800 XT for a reasonable price i think i've done ok for 40 quid.

well the agp version is 70 quid on OcUK, and i did have a look around and found it for up to a tenna cheaper in other places but not that low...

guess i didn't look hard enough then...
