My brothers x800 has recently broken and he could do with a cheap replacement (around 30quid?).
I was looking at the 3450 and the 8500gt and was wondering which is faster in games? ie. trackmania, source engine etc
He's not looking for serious power but it would be nice to get him something on par with the x800.

AFAIK all 3 cards are quite close performance wise. The 3450 does perform better in source based games. Look at the MSI ATI Radeon HD 3450 256MB DDR2 and Asus ATI Radeon EAH3450/HTP/256M Vcool Silent 256MB DDR2 as they are clocked higher than the others.

Both of those would be a downgrade from the X800 GTO (despite the lack of SM 3.0 needed for newer games). The 8500GT is somewhat slower than a 7600GS while the 3450 is even worse.

found an 8600gt for 35 but its ddr2. I assume this would be better than 7600gs as the 7600gs uses ddr2 aswell.
I owned a 7600gs and i believe it was about on par with my brothers x800gto?

Well... £35 is a difficult price point for gaming and graphics cards. You can spend a little more and get much much better performance like a 3850 for £50+

If your brother's PC is around 2005 spec you don't want to spend too much I guess. A 8600GT DDR2 will be fine for CS:S and TF2.
