im posting this for a friend since he needs some help.

His specs are:
3.6ghz pentium 4 (single core)
Radeon x850
1gig ram

Hes a PC gamer but since hes going uni etc hes short for cash and doesnt want to upgrade his pc till next year. Since his card doesnt support SM 3.0 it only supports 2.0 games like bioshock dont work for him, and he really wants to play bioshock and other up and coming games but on pc stated above.

So i suggested he get a X1950 pro from ocuk since i have one and its great.

but he has a few questions

1. 256mb or 512mb will the 512mb be worth it considering his specs
2. how much watts does it need i said 450 ???

If you have one you should know that it asks for a 350 Watt PSU & that it won't let you monitor it's temperatures, control it's fan speed, is a tad on the noisy side, but performs well :)

If he's got the cash go for the 512mb version but as mentioned the money saved on the 256MB version could go towards another GB mem taking him up to 2GB, which would be the better upgrade.

If you are thinking of the O.C. cards (I was) I suggest the 512Mb version may be a better bet as I believe it has standard features lacking in the 256Mb version & a quieter fan + you can always nail in more system RAM later. Talking of which, is there much to be gained by going say, from 1Gb to 2Gb of system RAM when being used at the resolution mentioned at the start ?

The extra RAM may help but to be honest wait and see what performance he gets iwth the x1950pro 256MB first. The 512MB one would be a waste as at those resolutions it simply would not get used. His current PSU should be fine, the x1950pro is going to use pretty much the same power as an x850 give or take 5-10w.

yea should keep my friends pc running for a little while longer, thanks for all the help.
£8 only difference between the OC cards at the moment, I got the 256Mb version just before the 512Mb was available, if I'd have waited a week................but such is life on the upgrading treadmill. No gripes about performance though, just the fan & the lack of temperature monitoring.

im a bit confused here, i know the x1950pro is a good card but just been looking at some benchmarks comparing it to my 7600GS and the difference seems to be extremly large which doesn't seem right. what do you guys think:

if that sort of difference is true then im really in luck for my old agp system.

ahh the benchmarks must be dodgey in this one the x1950pro beats a 8800gts 320, thats not right at all.

can someone shed some light on this for us?

No, those benches look about right.

The 7600 is a mid range card for that gen, the X1950 a high range card. The equivalent ATi to the 7600 would be the X1650, as again those benches show.

One thing though is that I'm currently trying to get an X1950 to work in my mates PC and am having issue with getting it to run properly. I know the card used to work ok as I had it in an old AGP system of mine. Though it has been sat in the box for a while and the old AGP system I had is no longer here to test the card.

It picks up the AGP at x8 and fastwrites are on but all the other read/write settings are off and even a rebuild of the PC hasn't sorted it.
