Hi, i got one of the PowerColor x850xt from OCUK ofcourse :) and at stock its 520 / 540

i swapped out the stock cooler for a nice Arctic Silencer, that dropped noise and temps by about 1 third !!!! was well impressed, then upgraded the bios to the PE version.

Ever since then i have been playing games, then overclocking a little more, bit by bit and then testing and so on, using AtiTool for o'c and fan control.

At the moment i have it at 605 / 585 without any problems, and it just seems to keep on going.

When just in the desktop i have underclocked it by 200 for both gpu and mem and it can actually idle at 55 with NO FAN going, completely passive.

How have other people found these cards for overclocking?? mine just seems to keep on going for ever lol, best £150 i ever spent.

Nice overclock :)

I have an X800 Pro (16 pipeline mod + XT PE bios), but it won't overclock by more than 5-10Mhz on either gpu or memory past the XT PE (520/560), most likely as it was one of the first batches and they have probably improved the chip a bit since.

How do you flash the Bios?

I cant find the original article which tells you exactly, but its real simple

go to http://www.techpowerup.com/bios/

and download your manufacturers bios

and then use the winflash 105 version to flash it.

reboot

done

obviously if you screw up you card then dont blame me, but i had no issues and it gets you a card that is like £50 more exspensive for free

Thanks superfly

Out of interest would i get any benefit from flashing my x850xt to x850xtPE if i wasnt going to overclock the card?

I know the PE speeds are 540 and 590 respectively (which i could OC to without flashing) but surely there would have to be more reason than that to do it?

Zeph.

Hi,

I got one of those as well! :) The first one they sent me was totally feeked! all I could see on the screen was 1000 little coloured boxes? One swift RMA later I have one that works. . .but since I have just changed from an P4/AGP system to an AMD/nForce4 platform I been busy playing around with that but I would like to give the new PCI-Express card a bit of a bash soon. .

The HSF on my card is silent, except for a few seconds when I first boot the system, and it seems to do that job so I will give it a little overclock using that first (with ATI-Tool of course!)

Can you give me more details on which Arctic VGA cooler u got ta! :)

It would have been Artic Cooler Ati Rev.2 I think this is suitable of all x800 and x850 series cards. OCuk stock them at a good price have a quick look now.

The X800 series do seem to overclock very well in general.

My x800gto2 overclocks to 670/1270 on stock volts with its stock cooling. I am scoring 7600+ in 3dmark05 with a x2 3800+. Its a great little card for the money.

I believe aswel as uping the standard clock speeds, i think it tightens the memory timings aswel?

anyone confirm this?

i got it from OCUK aswel ofcourse lol its in the coolers section

Arctic Cooling Rev.2 ATI 5 (X850 Series) VGA Silencer (HS-018-AR)

its £14, but i just checked for you and it looks like its out of stock right now.

I have got my PowerColor X850XT running at 562/626 with original bios and stock cooler. I have used ATiTray for the first time. This much more effective than ATi Tool which I have used previously. I could "only" manage an o/c of 545/602 with it. My 3dmark 05 has gone from 4830 to 5632. Obviously still not the magic 6000 that lots of you have seemed to achieve, but a pleasing improvement none the less. I have also now made the move up to playing Far Cry at 1280 x 1024 with everything on maximum from my previous safety zone of 1024 x 768 at the same settings I will be trying Half Life at this resolution too. What a card I am very pleased with it as you will have gathered. My PC is a P4 550 3.4mhz with 512mb of memory.

would have thought clock of that would hit over 6000 points as my agp Asus x850xt hit 5800 at stock speeds, 520/540, and with it clocked up to 560/617 can get 6400 points, all with the stock bios and cooler with temps never going over 63'c.

Exactly my thoughts, I'm not sure what is holding it back, new to this type of stuff but I have the similar temperatures as you (68C max) Any Ideas? Lack of memory, I see you have a GB to my 512mb.

My HIS X850XT gets to 540/610 from 520/540.

I was well impressed with the memory clock but the GPU just gives up at 550 everytime. I think when its time to upgrade it i'll probably volt mod it and see how far i can get then. :)

Other than a Artic cooler will leave alone for the forseeble future, voltmods seem really scary to me!! Ive only had the card for two weeks and the performance is such an improvement from the OEM X600 Pro 256mb I had in my Advent PC previously I can live with my efforts for now, but I would like to know whats behind my relatively poor 3dMark 05.

Well with my spec:

*AMD Athlon 64 3700SD @ 2.8GHz
*1GB Geil DDR-3200 @ DDR500
*ATi X850XT @ 540/620
*DFI lanparty SLI-DR

I get about 6600 marks. Stock with my system was only just over 6000 so i don't think your score is that bad. :)

I see, This is why I ve tried to not benchmark before I knew I would then worry about improving things as opposed to enjoying my gaming!!
