Hi guys,

In the process of putting together a new system and need advice on which route to take.
Max budget is £1100, need gpu, cpu, ram, motherboard, psu.

Route 1

X99
Gigabyte Ud4
5820k
16gb corsair 2400
Evga 980 sc

Route 2
Z97

Z97 Asus ranger
4970k
16gb corsair 2400
X2 evga 970 sc in sli

Cheers
Dave

Z97 then, the CPU is faster for gaming because it runs at a faster core speed and games cant make use of the X99 extra cores.

Looks good cheers stulid and rjc.

I do like benchmarks which is why I was considering X99, but don't want to sacrifice gaming performance.

The last system I had (in Sig) was really good but unfortunately had to sell.

Iirc you had a 4770k at 4.6ghz prior to the X99 build, 4790k is basically an overclocked 4770k and will cope grand with sli 970's.

That's right setter, I'm hoping sli 970 should see me right for a year before 20nm is established.

I'll move to Broadwell at that point, I keep having second thoughts on the x99 system though, is it not more future proof? I'm only gaming at 1080p so can't see a single 980 struggling at that.. bah.. I don't know what to do.

It cant be more future proof than a free upgrade of the board within 3 years.

The X99 system will only really come into its own in tasks that will utilise the extra cores/threads of the 5820k. As very few games will do so, Z97 is more than enough for a gaming setup. Never had any bother running games with the setup in sig.

:(
I linked you the threads:( you not been reading have you:(
I'm sorry stulid forgive me, just read it, that's the route I'm taking then!

Yeah your right setter, I'm not chasing benchmarks this time, just want the best gaming experience for gta, witcher 3, farcry4 etc.

Still torn on which gpu setup to go for though.

Definitely the 970's. For me personally, i dont see that big a performance increase with the 980 over the 970 to justify the higher cost.

Been pretty impressed with it, ive had quite a few sli setups over the years. Most recent being 670's and the pair in sig. Sometimes with newer games you have to wait for sli profiles in new drivers, (probably the same for xfire). And as im sure your well aware theres the increase in heat/power use. Though the latest nv 900 series are incredibly good when it comes to theese points.

OP has expressed interest in 4k gaming in the future, shouldnt the X99 be considered for increased multi pcie bandwidth when these 4k gpus eventually come around? Its not just about the cpu, its the features of X99 and the potential of the socket overall. Stop making it about the extra 2 cores not being fully used (for now) and atleast point out pcie features which will drive the future gpus better. will this not increase gaming performance more than Z97 can?

If you don't want to do X99 for the features and potential then that's fine, just buy an old X58 board and Xeon 5650. it will do what a 4790k can and you will save aload of cash.

When you work it out, there isn't much price difference between this and the cheapest X99 set-up... BUT if OP hangs on to it until Skylake or beyond, he will be able to leapfrog X99 altogether and thanks to the free motherboard upgrade, do so at a lower cost than someone looking to jump ship from X99 (who has paid more in the first place). Of course, you could argue that someone with X99 may not NEED to upgrade at the same time and therefore get more longevity, perhaps by simply upgrading their CPU. That may be the case, although we can never know what the PC landscape will look like 1-2 years from now. Lots of unknowns here... at the end of the day, I don't think there's a wrong decision. :)
