Hi all.

Specs are
5820k (oc to 4ghz)
Gigabyte x99 motherboard
16gig ram (3000 Cl 16)
Radeon Vega 56 (few months old)
Seasonic 850watt psu (few months old)

Pc crashed when gaming (csgo)
Instant shutdown and no vga.

Wouldn't post without reseting bios settings a few times.
Fails to load windows on the first few attempts, eventually boots but gives lots of errors (Side by side configuration incorrect)

So far I have installed a spare m2 drive, unplugged all my other drives and tried to reinstall windows from USB onto the empty m2
It will boot the USB but it crashes within a few seconds of white spot spinning.

I tried with one stick of ram in different slots /banks.
I tried my spare 970
Still the same problem.

Feels like the motherboard is broken :(
Out of warranty.

Is there anything else worth trying?

If not what's the best option to fix it?
Im perfectly happy with the performance of the 5820k
Main uses are lightroom and gaming.

New board, but what to buy?
There don't seem to be many options.

Or new cpu as well? If so what?
Keep the ram or buy new?

Thanks.

Tried a different power supply? Any error codes on the digital display on the mobo? I use x99 gigabyte board and it has a dig display so I am guessing you may also have one. Tried removing the battery for a min and/or replacing it?. It may be the motherboard but could be a number of other things too still. Any beeps on boot?. You say you have reset the bios so I am guessing you have tried with all overclocks off which would normally be the first thing I try. If you do need to pick up an x99 board just get one off fleabay, don't replace that chipset, still a superb chip and you could easily push that chip past 4.4/4.5 with the right cooling.

Hi

Is the psu a Seasonic Focus/Focus Plus by any chance ?

Also is the GTX 970 an Asus Strix ?

Reason I ask is those cards had issues with that psu that could cause black screens/shutdowns.

Yes it is a strix 970 but a focus gold..
Same fault using my Radeon Vega 56 so I doubt it's the gpu.

The system now reliability posts, but won't load windows (from USB) as it crashes.
I checked the voltage of the bios battery and it's OK. Also checked psu voltages for what it's worth, all in spec)

I did remove all overclock when I reset it after the initial crash.

There are no post codes on my board and no beeps.

Is ebay the best option for a replacement motherboard?
How irritating :(

Have you got another power supply to try mate? Do you live in the north west I could borrow you one if you do? 2nd hand boards for x99 there are a few places such as the MM here I believe but fleabay or amazon may have one. Tbh it is more likely the power supply I would guess.

The Focus Gold is the same. Also that psu had issues with the Vega cards as well so that could well be your problem.

I tested with my old corsair 550 psu and I have exactly the same fault.

New motherboard it is.

It will take me months to get enough posts for the MM.
EBay is very limited or dubious quality.
I have found somewhere selling new boards for £250 and I think that's the best option at the moment.

That sucks :( I wonder if Gigabyte could test the board and potentially repair it for a fee. That should work out a lot cheaper although you would have more downtime. Maybe see if @GIGA-Man can help in any way.

I'll try asking Gigabyte about rma/repair.

A new x99 board looks like it's going to be £250.
I can't be bothered with ebay crap shoot and would like to be running again asap.

Im considering buying this instead.

And this

That's £300 for ryzen 3600 and a b450 motherboard.

Sell my 5820k for £50+ and it's the same price but "new"

Is this sensible move?
Is there a better buy available?

Definitely no sense to put bigger amounts of money into old dead end platform with no modern CPUs for it.
X99 takes at most 10 core Broadwell-E's with 3.5GHz turbo.
That's something even current Ryzen selection beats.
And next summer's Zen3 is no doubt going to improve things further.

You could drop in 12 core Ryzen as later upgrade in year or so when prices of older/outdated models drop.
Unlike in case of old Intel CPUs which stay ridiculously high priced for being outdated.

He will get a motherboard for less than £80 on fleabay, I wouldn'd personally change the whole lot when the 5820k is still a good enough chip for gaming. I would just change the board.

No way i would be putting anything like £250 into a dead x99 platform - if you can find a MB on ebay though thats decent money then its a winner.
Still wouldnt be going much over 60 or 70 quid second hand for a board.

Then you could always punt the 5820k which is still worth a few bob and take the opportunity to upgrade. a 3600x would be faster although it still a 6/12 cpu - maybe push the boat out to an 8 core for a proper upgrade.

It's possible but X99 is a little old now so we may be lacking in the parts needed to repair it... Let me know if you want it looked at and I'll see if I can help... No promises though..

Is the board the gigabyte gaming 7?, if so I use the same board, if you live close we could properly test it with my board mate to make sure it is the board like people think. Infact I was considering changing my whole chipset anyway just for more cores because I do a lot of heavy workloads for my work. Was looking at the new Intel cpu's that are coming out or the AMD 2990W. Let me know the exact board mate, if I do change I could always send you this to test if you live further away. (Ocuk I am not trying to sell here, just want to help him)

Its a Gaming 5P
Bought in a black Friday deal quite a few years ago now.

I bought the B450 board and 3600 CPU.
Now back up and running, maybe slightly faster than before, but I still need to tweak the ram.
I cant really afford the down time, and if I can fix the 5820k I will have enough bits to build a second rig thats pretty decent, or just sell and recoup some of my cash.

Also bought a PC011 XL to put it in, but it looks a bit empty at the moment without watercooling fitted but i'm not rushing that bit :)

Thanks for the kind offer.
I will send you a trust :)

Thanks for all the help.
