xbitlabs dual core roundup

I think it depends on the resolution you play at and the GPU, if you have a G80 or something, then the CPU will probably limit you if the conroe isn't @ in the high 2GHZ (at the LEAST). 3GHZ+ is far better.

If you are still using an X1900 or something, then A64's won't bottleneck you as much, especially on Supreme Commander.

Having said all that, I have noticed a difference in terms of FPS, but I can't really say that much, cause my old system was an A64 with AGP, so my upgrade route went:

A64 + X800XT

Conroe + 6200 Turbo Cache and wait for the G80 320MB
Conroe @ 3300MHZ + G80

Either way though, conroe is "far faster" in PC terms. I could be wrong on this, but I think it would be about the same jump as an Athlon XP to a A64 based setup.

"far faster" is very much user defined anyways, I mean, to some people the G80 is an completely massive improvement that stomps on the X1900's and G70's, to others its simply "faster".
In LOMAC at 1600x1200 my A64 was holding me back massively, my 7800gtx flew when i paired it with the C2D, this is true of games like COH and MTW2 as well, also noticed a huge improvement in CD/Video encoding. Q4 is uber fast at max settings Using the rig in sig btw but flew with my 7800gtx/C2D setup.

I paid just over £100 for my A64 4000 which I had running at 3ghz
I paid just over £100 for my E6300 which I've run at the same speed.

The e6300 wiped the floor with the Athlon in every respect, in some cases actually double the performance.

All you AMD apologists need to wise up.

My point was more that most games are GPU bound. I have never played LOMAC but I imagine it is very CPU bound.

But still, bottom line is, Conroe is FAR faster than my A64 in just about everything that I use my system for, from gaming to Photoshop CS3 work, to DVD creation, to everything in between.

Even HD content plays far nicer (I admit though, I haven't tried much, just the trailers from Microsoft and stuff).

Did you buy both the CPU's at the same time? :p
When I can get an AM2 3800 X2 for under £50 I don't see why I need to wise up. When clocked a little this chip is excellent, the money saved can be put on getting better memory/graphics or a pint at the end of the day...

Did your 4000 suddenly become unusable and hideously slow the day that C2D was released? I doubt it...

Better Gfx cards wont help unless your on high Res

I see where your comming from. To use the old Car comparason, My brother has a 911 CS4 and whilst he was away i drove it for a month, i have now gone back to my car which although is capable of 140+MPH and 0-60 in sub 8 secs seems sooooo slow.
A64 are only slow when directly compared.
