I guess that this would be a Console Games & Hardware related issue, but if not could a passing Don please move it.

Earlier today my Xbox 360 arrived and all is fine, however I have just tried to setup the Windows Media Connect on my computer, this works fine and I can share files from the computer, however the problem occurs when I setup the NAS (Buffalo Linkstation 250GB) as one of the shares, it doesn’t look for media in there and will only show the shared files that are locally stored on the computer.

Has anyone else encountered this and is there a resolution, I can only imagine that it is a permissions problem, a quick Google revealed a number of other users having problems with accessing files stored on a NAS.

So suggestions please...

A workaround would be to map the network share to a drive letter :) Then add that as a directory in WMC :D

Doesn't seem to work, I have My Documents mapped to Z:, however when I add Z: as a share in Windows Media Connect I get the message on the Xbox that no music is found, I have also tried a more direct route of setting the share to "Z:\My Music". At the moment I'm copying files to my desktop which I have setup as a share to view them on the Xbox, this works so I know the basic settings are right it's just when the network gets involved.

It should work as thats how I have my Maxtor 300GB NAS drive running. I can stream files from the NAS to the 360 no problems.

Can you stream direct from the NAS to the 360 without the PC being on? That is ultimately what I am looking for, something to hold all my media on and stream to the 360 without the need for the PC to be on.

No, that wouldn't be possible, as the 360 interfaces with WMC, which wouldn't be running on a standalone NAS box. You would need to keep both the PC running WMC, and the PC/NAS with the files you want to access. When you add a directory to WMC, it doesn't always scan it immediately. Kill it and restart it, or reboot, should get it to scan the folders :)
