Due to buying the 5 prince of persia games on steam recently in the sale, I've been looking at getting an xbox pad for windows, but there appears to be massive variances in price between the different kinds of pads (all microsoft official ones btw).

Can someone clarify exactly what I need to buy? I wouldn't mind a wireless one, although wired is also fine, depending on price. The black wired one seems to be £17.99 at most places online which is a pretty good price, yet I dont know if going wireless is a better idea? Also with the wireless pads, do you need anything else with it, like a wireless receiver for the PC or a battery pack etc for the controller?

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated

Yes any xbox 360 pad will work, you just download the drivers from microsoft and it automatically configures the button mapping for most games.

I have the wired one and it is totally awesome. I don't need to charge at all with it being wired and soo many games detect and work with it. I accidently discovered Crysis 2 and DNF for example worked with it lol!

The wire is also pretty long too. I highly recommend it.

Get the black wired one, I got it recently and its excellent. The one I got is a newer version and I like it better than my wireless one I have on my xbox. As said above you just plug it in, it will download the drivers if your on winodws7/vista and it defaults controls on most newer games, which is handy! Good for the plat formers and racing/sport games on the PC.

I have both a wireless(with reciever) and a wired pad for my pc. I bought the wireless first and got so sick of the charging the batteries i ended up buying a wired one for 17.99 so in my opinion you are just better off getting the wired pad as it`s cheaper and less sodding charging or replacing batteries.

Get a PS3 controller and a £1 bluetooth dongle, install motioninjoy and set it to emulate a 360 controller, thats what i did. Well, I sponged a controller my brother thought was broken and fixed it but still.

I do the same... It works well, but its necessary to start the software to enable the controller before you start using it; though that isn't a big deal :)

I have a wired 360 pad. It works with zero hassle. No need for wireless when I'm sitting 18" away from where it's plugged in :p

Probably gonna go with this direction, based on just having a go with the PS3 pad and wasn't impressed sadly lol. Didn't seem very responsive :(

Plus no charging issues etc going wired.

Get the wireless one from OCUK:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GC-001-MS&groupid=702&catid=288&subcat=

It includes the USB receiver you need no wires so its easier to use & great when you connect your PC to a large HDTV like many of us have done for years you get proper HD gaming via the PC & wireless gamepad for games which do not support the gamepads use xppader to make those work!

+1, got one, huge step up comparing to my simple wired pad.
It set automatically button config for most games, + playing sometimes with friends fifa2011, SF4, about 3-4 meters from TV and no problem, wireless is so much easier and better (for me)

The wired one is cheaper, lighter, no faffing around changing batteries, has a long cable and doesn't have a dongle to lose.
