Xbox 360 DVD playing ability?

My experience with the 360 playback insn't great.

With the VGA cable connected to a Dell 2005FPW the image is pretty blocky and pixelated, as if it needs anti aliasing.

I think its more to do with the 360 outputing DVD at 480p and then my monitor having to do the scaling to fit the whole screen. Unlike DVD playback on my PC which is fine due to the software upscaling the resolution.

I take it the 50hz setting is on the Xbox, right?

Just bought a Samsung LE40R51 beast for my PC and the Xbox 360 - just need to get my hands on a premium! :)

Thanks guys. I won't be using it on a PC TFT so hopefully it will display better at my TV's native res of 720.

Would anyone mind explaining what "tearing" means is regards to LCD displays? Is it similar to ghosting? I have heard a lot of people talking about displays tearing when playing the 360...and have no idea what they are talking about!

Its when two frames are drawn at once, bottom half of the frame is ahead of the top half causing a tear.

It's a horrible DVD player. Jerky playback and missing frames on 60hz and 50hz. It's less evident on 50hz but it's nowhere near the quality of even a cheapo standalone DVD player.

If you're going to spend that much on a TV, I would definitely consider buying a half-decent standalone upscaling DVD player. The Oppi for £170 or Denon 1920 for £200 are both good buys.

The problem with all consoles when it comes to DVD playback is the noise they generate. If you're watching the latest Hollywood blockbuster then you probably won't notice it, but it's darn annoying in anything with any subtly.

Thanks matey i needed some recommedations - i shall look into these, i take it their HDMI or Component or whatever and are HD ready? Im a n00b when it comes to things like this....appreciate all the help i can get :D

Upscaling DVD players, basically, take the signal from the DVD, work a little magic, and give you a high def output. In most cases, the scaling filters in these players will be better than the ones in the telly - hence why they're so popular.

They'll play DVDs over HDMI or Component. If you use HDMI then they'll scale the picture up so it looks great on a HDTV.

Ok - and that HDMI cable comes with the Xbox 360 Premium package, right?

My TV has a huge load of inputs on the back - HDMI appears to be one of them :)

Nope the Xbox 360 premium cables are only component and composite. At the minute there is no HDMI cable available for the Xbox 360.

Have you decided not to go for a standalone upscaling player?

Not decided anything yet really - but i will most likely get a decent standalone player. Is an HDMI cable going to be released, and is there a date?
