XBOX 360 Elite - What IGN is saying

The more I read about this 'Elite' the more it makes me think where MS are trying to go with it?

Ok I understand that they want to give people choice because not everyone needs/wants Wireless, HD DVD drive etc, and I totally agree with this. But Now they have 3 packs to choose from so why not include everything in the Elite? Unlike the PS3 where you are paying for everything regardless if you want it or not (though I still think it's cheap for what you get :p), people will still have a choice with the Core and Premium packs.

It's far from being 'Elite' IMO.

Yes, I agree it is more media based - I never said it wasn't. What I said is that it isn't a media center FIRST. It's a games console FIRST, and they've improved the media capabilities secondly (admitedly more to the benefit of the american customers rather than anyone else).

Yes, I think it may be more suited to be compared with AppleTV than the PS3. But I still can't see why people are moaning about the lack of HD-DVD. If you really want it, buy it for Christ's sake! You don't buy a car with all the features unless you want those features; you'd buy the cheaper model - so why complain when people do the exact same thing with consoles?

WE ALL KNOW AMERICA DOES
Does that mean you are now agreeing this is a media machine??
But the point is, you could just buy an upgraded HDD, they are releasing that on its own anyway. So there is no point to it.
So for downloadable content they brought out a new console?
I think if you are gonna do a job do it right. It is a far cry from being 'Elite'

They've created a new package, not brought out a new console - what's wrong with having more choice?

And yes, yet again I will agree with you in saying it's more of a media machine than the current premium is - but only for downloadable content! So it's not changing from a gaming console with added media abilities - it's still exactly that. It's just expanding (slightly) on its media abilities, whilst still giving you the choice of getting a HD-DVD player if you want!

Christ, people make it sound like having 3 packages for 1 console is a cardinal sin - what's the difference between 3 SKUs and 2 SKUs?

I want a console as a console, something that plays games. I will always have seperate items as they will generally do the job better than a combined unit in my experience. The only advantage this has over the current premium is HDMI which I want. Yes I would use the Xbox as a media extender as this is one of the reasons it was designed for, but I do not like the idea that I need to be forced with something that isn't needed just yet.

You dont need to live in america or have an american 360 to benifit from the USA content. This content includes currently over 100 films and over 100 Tv episodes as well as many HD trailers that are not on the PSN service nor Live in the UK.

Whats needed, simple

1.USA Account
2.USA Points available in 1600 (These are region specific so UK/Europe wont work)

HDMI is a nice addition and might help improve the picture quality on some displays over component.

Heard today the expected price is £350 not sure if this was mentiined in the thread so sorry if it already has.

One thing is certain MS will not alienate owners of other versions of the 360 so you are NOT going to be seeing games that require features the CORE model does not offer.

The Elite model is a model of further choice.

Come the newer 65nm revised motherboards (Xmas probably) i would expect them ALL to utilise the HDMI connection as manufacturing one motherboard makes more sense than two. Even Sony realised this ditching the previous non HDMI 20Gb PS3 for including it.

So how do we get around this exactly? Do we sign up for a new live account and give some dodgy U.S personal details? What about buying new points with a UK card?

It was covered here a while back and tbh i also started a thread recently regarding it which amounted to next to no interest so im not going to go through it again.

Using a UK payment method i would think would trigger that your not in the USA. USA points are not tracable if imported or the code given to you via email from a USA resident.

You do require setting up a USA hotmail account and using that on the 360.

I know it may not be the same as the PS store (obviously), but can you use a mastercard for live transactions? If so a while back i signed up for an online mastercard, and i found out that it does not use a registered name and address so basically you can put your name as anything anywhere and it will ok it. Ive only found one website that didnt like it, the PS stores for the US and Japan are fine so it may be good for Xbox Live?

He makes a good point about the price of the new console. I think MS have really missed the boat here, I thought they would have run a really aggressive advertisement campaign this month and knocked the premium pack out at around £199.

Instead they release a third incarnation of the console?

ign is pro sony i think while gamespot is pro microsoft so would take this in to account when reading reviews on these sites

I don't remember anyone accusing IGN of being pro Sony when they gave glowing reviews to the 360 and its launch games.

Fact is all these game sites have some bias, but we can't just claim bias every time we don't agree with the review.

All those big Flash adverts on the pages of all games sites show me the bias, but what can you do?
