I would say it has better airflow when Flat so if this is directly related to RROD then I would say Yes it is more likely to fail if run upright, Including the risk of disc scratching I can't see the space being saved being worth the risk whether it's a fact or not.

Not entirely. The whole of the right hand side is a big vent. Stood upright you loose that. It has more surface area when stood upright though.

It's a mad one to think about has you block the right side which is obviously the most vented side because the HD is on tuther side, Then you lift the bottom of it by having it on the side so increase the overall surface area that needs cooling, Also everything is bolted to the bottom therefore heat transfer would be different in each occasion, Damn my head hurts, Change the subject quick
