Looking at the graphics on Modern Warfare 2 on the XBOX and I can't believe how good the graphics are on an old machine. Here we are looking at the latest ATI and NVIDIA cards and they don't seem to offer a great deal more than the xbox..... I'm missing something I'm sure.

My 5850 allows me to run the game at almost twice the resolution of the Xbox, with anti-aliasing and all the effects on max. It looks better.

Problem is, the engine is old and IW aren't pushing the limits of PC hardware.

PC version has better lighting, more detail in the textures and higher detail models... tho in the heat of a firefight you'd be hard pressed to notice - except maybe the lighting.

*sighs*

Here we go, lets just hope not too many people stroll in from consoles and from PC gaming otherwise we could have a war on our hands. A war that could skirmish off into XBox v PS3 and nVidia v ATI.

Can we just say they are both equally and perfectly matched in everyway?

I think it looks really really good personally - even more impressive seeing as the engine still has some roots in the original quake 3 engine.

Don't know, I thought my old ATI 9800 pro was supposed to be better than the XBOX, but looking at MW2, I don't think the 9800 could do that.

Don't know where you got that from - the Xbox GPU has 48 stream processors which places it roughly in line in terms of performance with the ATi X1900. It's difficult to compare like for like though as the architectures are quite different.

I know where PanchoVilla is coming from.
I keep telling people how much better PCs are than consoles, the problem is there are few jaw droppingly amazing PC graphics games available at the moment, my best being Crysis (still) FarCry2, X3 Terran conflict, and sorry to say but COD 5.
I aso like the nice shiny look of the Witcher, with its attention to detail.

Personally I like my 2048x1152 res, 100fps with high res lighting and textures...

console is fine if your sitting at a distance... but try playing up close it looks quite tatty...

Oh please let it happen it will be fun

I will just jump in on this instead of making useless comments.

Dont just take in to account the graphics of any given scene, think about the physics, lighting and actual feel of the gameplay while playing. I was quite impressed how high I could turn up the graphics on my GTX260, I havent seen it on any console yet though but I assume the experiance will be similiar.

Have you played the game on a gaming PC to compare?

Obviously, Nvidia and ATI can't reinvent the wheel - their cards are just playing a ported game, so they will look very similar to their console cousins.

However, any decent gaming PC built in the last 2 years can whip the PS3 or 360 in terms of performance. Consoles only render MW2 at 600p and use upscaling hardware to fill up a 1080p TV. Meanwhile a PC renders it all, so everything will look much better. Throw in AA, AF, lighting, shadows and other fancyness and the PC version looks better.

However, this kind of game (console port) is not really the showcase of PC gaming power, though it does acquit itself rather well. If you want to see the true power, play something like Crysis and compare it to and pretty console game - its a different league.

I'm at the point where the only reason I choose PC over consoles is because the mouse-keyboard combo is far superior in FPS games than a console controller.

An interesting view, I know people who would argue the other way until they were blue in the face.

It can't be that much of a sore topic surely. More of a reality check. I mean, I have PC's where I do mostly web surfing/office/light gaming. Now I want to play a good FPS game on the pc and find myself speccing something costing £500 plus - and the advantages aren't £300 over the xbox. I'll still end up on this +£500 road though, albeit to play modern warfare 2 again on the PC with a keyboard and mouse.

what gives?!
