Xbox 360 - price drop for Christmas?

I doubt it. I'm sure there'll be a few "attractive" deals or bundles which will be an abosolute bargain, but a reduction on the console itself I can't see happening until March 2007.

Microsoft have answered this question long ago. No retail price cuts for the Premium this christmas. Any price cuts will be soley down to the retailer themselves.

As above, keep an eye out for bundles which will give you more for your money.

Why? to compete with a £500 console

Bear in mind that you need to add £150 or so to a 360 to get HD-DVD.

And besides, MS will want to make the 360 package all the more sweeter to try and knab those who are unsure about the PS3.

thats the only thing putting me off buying a 360 right now, is that fact im going to have to spend £150 to buy a HD-DVD when it comes out, so i might aswell buy a PS3 although its blue-ray

choices choices.

But to me, that argument doesn't hold up. Looking at it from a completely unbiased point of view, you may as well buy the 360 now, enjoy several months of HD gaming, buy the HD-DVD drive when it is released and STILL save £100 or so over the PS3.

Currently, for me, the only reasons for holding out for the PS3 is a couple of killer titles that won't appear on the 360 or some insider info that makes you think Blueray will be the HD media of choice.

EDIT - Ok, so I might have my total saving a little off, but the rest of my post still holds true.

£129.99 RRP to correct you, and that's with free King Kong and Remote... huzzah... Still, with a 360 + HD-DVD drive, £280 + £130 = £410, and pushing PS3 money, and the PS3 has wireless built in also... so unless MS do put a pricedrop in before Euro PS3 release, the HD/BR-DVD option will be quite tight, and either option will probably sway people depending on games only then I guess, but the 360 does have the advantage of not having to pay for the HD-DVD drive, wheras the PS3 is so expensive because of the BR-DVD drive, and you don't have the option. Ah well, pros and cons for each :p

although its early, and can easily revert, at the moment hddvd is 1 up on blueray, however, as i said, we wont know for sure till post chrimbo

thats another good point, my network is wireless so going to have to spend another £60 for a wireless networking card if i want to use live,

Can you please tell me how you save £100?
£299.99 (or even 280 if you want, but the bundle is a good deal) )+ £129.99 is £100 cheaper than £425
Thats before we tack on £40 quid for online gaming and a £60 wireless network adapter ;)

So thats a £529.96 xbox 360 Vs a £425 PS3 lol hmmm PS3 looking cheap to me baby! Even take out live and wireless networking still £4.98 MORE for an xbox360 with HD-DVD capabilities, yet no wireless or online multiplayer hmmm

Edit and if u wanted to be really pedantic xbox live is £39.99 PER ANUM! over the life of a 5 year console thats another 200 notes on the price oooooooo. Just MS though, like labour 'stealth tax'

Is it fair trying to compare prices for a console that won't be released here for 6 months??

In 6 months the minimum you'll get is a PS3 for £425 if you're lucky. Right now you can get:

Xbox 360 Premium +
extra wireless pad +
PGR3
£285

A few weeks and you'll be able to pick up a HD-DVD player with King Kong and remote for £130 so total: £415

Unfair as there's much more to the 360 so how much will an extra PS3 pad cost and a game of PGR3 quality? and a Blue-ray movie? I'd say £100 minimum and probably more so total: £525

Saving of £100 at least...

Also how much of a deal will you be able to get on a 360 by the time the PS3 is released here? it will only get cheaper and you can bet there will be some good package deals with the console and HD-DVD player.

We can't really go into the networking side yet as Sony still have not gone properly into their online strategy, but we'll have to wait and see I guess.

As it stands, and from what I personally know, people will have a little dilema. Taking in todays prices, and that the UK currently is only getting the 60GB PS3. In terms of hardware alone, not looking at bundles either:

(1)

If, a person wants just a games console with capability of playing games:
Xbox 360:
£210 Core Console
£15 Memory Card
Total: £225

PlayStation 3
£425 Console
Total: £425

So that's a £200 difference, but, that's only if single player games and no sort of online features were to be used, but you have a corded controller, but I guess you get what you pay for, and stuff like Wi-Fi and Blu-Ray DVD playback is wasted on the PS3.

(2)

Now we have the gamer that wants to play their games, and also connect to the internet, download demos, vids and content and play against others online:

Xbox 360:
£280 Premium Console
£35 Xbox Live 12 Month Sub (Realistically)
£60 Xbox Wireless Thingy (Optional)
Total for 1 year: £315-£375

PlayStation 3:
£425 Console
£?? Cost for downloading demos
Total: £425+

Again, the 360 is cheaper overall, but a lot closer in price, depending on your networking capability, the difference will be £110 to £50. That's excluding paying for content on the PS3 though, if that does happen that way.

(3)

Now, for the person that wants the full console to be a home cinema as well, with fully High Definition HD-DVD / Blu-Ray DVD capability:

Xbox 360
£280 Premium
£130 HD-DVD Drive
£35 Xbox Live 12 Month Sub (Realistically)
£60 Xbox Wireless Thingy (Optional)
Total: £410 to £445 to £470 to £505 (if going for Live as Well).

Playstation 3:
£425 console.
£?? Cost for downloading demos
Total: £425+

This is where the PS3 takes the advantage, as if the gamer wants everything out of their console, then the 360 will actually be the more expensive, though only if they go for the Wi-Fi option, if not, then the consoles will be pretty equal for those who use wired internet, as the possibility of the PS3 downloading content costs could increase the PS3 costs a little.

That's how I see it anyway. :p

I know I've not gone into as many combinations, but I haven't got all night :)

So we have the argument now over the features, the advantage the 360 has is that the features can be added on if they are needed by the user, so it can be a cheaper console to the casual gamer, but it can amount to an expensive choice if you want everything out of it. With the PS3, you get everything in the box, but you may also not want all of that, which is where the PS3 has its disadvantage, where some people don't want Blu-Ray, which probably puts the price up at least £100 to begin with.

We can't just compare bundle prices, as it's not fair overall, as the PS3 will likely have its own bundles that work out cheaper, somehow, though would be cheaper for buying lots of games I guess.

Edit:
Tarted up a little to make a bit easier to see points.

the thing is though i was countering the arguement of an xbox 360 + hd-dvd drive being £100 cheaper than a PS3, which it just plainly isn't.

But if you are bringing both machines to the exact same spec then the PS3 isnt that expensive at all. For what you get it is good value.
