My brother has been trying to get his Xbox Live to work in his new place. But when running the XBL diagnostic it reports that it has detected an MTU problem and that the internet connection MTU is less than 1360!

I have checked using ping -f -l 1460 from his PC and there is definately no MTU issue on his line.

So what on earth is the Xbox doing to report this error?

We've tried two routers to no avail. First a 3com thing and then a "known good" (because it was my router literally a month ago) Speedtouch 510v4.

The XBL "works" but is highly unreliable. It keeps signing in and out and games like Fifa will disconnect after a minute or two of playing.

I can't think what else it would be :(

I don't have an Xbox but googleage shows it's prolly a generic error? Do these work out of the box with a NAT router? Do you have to forward any ports? Is it wireless? Have you tried ethernet?

His ISP is Nildram but it works at my house just fine which is also a Nildram connection.

The Speedtouch 510v4 router used to be mine (and XBL worked fine on it for me)... and all I did was plug it in at his house and change the logon details for the ISP. Then I made sure the XBL port mappings pointed to the correct IP.

I've not blocked ICMP ping or anything untoward like that.

As nildram is owned by Tiscali, you might have a IPStream based connection and your friend LLU hence what may be causing the issue.

The speedtouch more than likely doesn't have an option to change MTU except through CLI, which is a major ballache.

I'd suggest if the 3com has an option to change the MTU use that and change it to 1400 and retest. Let us know how you get on.

We're both in the same town and same exchange and yes we're both on Tiscali LLU. It was horrendous before January but I think they must have upgraded something because now I can get pretty much full speed at any time of day :o

The 3com router worked at his old house with XBL. As did the Speedtouch work at my place literally just a month ago with XBL.

I hate to come across as a noob but I think it could be the ethernet cable :/ I just can't see what else it could be.

I'm sure this won't help, but 360 Live was acting very strange on Sunday 9th. I could host a 2 way race, but a third person could not join (the connection timed out) this has never happend before. It could be a temp. 360 Live issue and not you?
